There is nothing like the sight site of finely stained balau or teak benches to get you in the mood to entertain. With their deep rich colors and elegant lines they can really add the right touches to any outdoor area. Just imagine three or four of these benches around your favorite fountain or pond, or perhaps you have then placed here and there around your garden. No matter where you place such beautiful furniture you will surely enjoy the sight of them against so much greenery. But with any quality outdoor furniture there are certain ways to help them stand out more and last much longer.
First of all, whether you own one of our large patio dining sets or even a beautiful storage box, you will want to make sure it lasts many years looking as good as the day you brought it home. What happens all too often is that people get their furniture and then besides using it occasionally they forget about it. And even though teak and balau wood is meant to last many years outside they can still turn silvery after sitting in the sun for many years. So if you want to keep those rich hues on our garden furniture then make sure you clean it and seal it properly.
The best product to start you out with would be Banana River Natural Matte Sealer. This sealer is of the highest quality water based finish that will renourish and protect all your patio furntiture. Furthermore, this sealer is moisture resistant as well as helps keep away that silver color that comes with age. But many ask why they need to apply this after their purchase when each piece already comes with a finish on it. And the simple answer for that is the fact that the factory finish is not the same robust finish as the Banana River Sealer.
In fact, for some garden furniture it may last even less depending on the weather conditions. For example, if you live in an extremely dry and hot area with sun year round then you will want to make sure you apply a coat at least two times a year. But perhaps what really makes this product so great is that it easily blends with the existing finish so that you can cover scratches or even resurfaces your furniture to make it look like new. This is often a very handy tip to keep in mind when you have little ones at home or if you entertain often.
But besides how to keep your garden furniture looking like new you may also want to look into ways to accent your furniture. There are many wonderful add-ons and accessories like cushions and umbrellas to add those finishing touches to your garden area. Or perhaps you will want to add a wine cart or coffee table for ease and comfort while relaxing at the end of a day. No matter your needs you will find there to be many different pieces to choose from.
Covers For Garden Furniture
Teak is a hardwood and this is what makes the furniture so it is very durable. Plus this type of furniture will last quite a considerable amount of time because it is a very dense timber and contains high levels of resinous oil within it. It is this oil which actually not only makes the wood resistant to drying out but also from absorbing too much moisture.
When it comes to buying such teak furniture for the garden, you can either purchase it in its natural raw state or that which has been treated using a teak oil. When you first get the furniture home, it is a golden color, but as time passes, the wood will eventually begin to fade a silver grey color instead.
If you are happy for the wood to turn from a golden to silver grey color then once this has happened there is very little that you actually need to do. However, if you want yours to retain the golden color that it first came with then you will need to be regularly applying teak oil to its surface.
In order for your teak garden furniture to retain its golden color, then one should be applying teak oil to its surface twice a year. The first that you will need to do is actually clean the wood.
To do this you take some warm water (with a mild detergent mixed into it) and then use a soft damp cloth to wipe off and remove any dust or grit. After you have done this, you now need to leave the wood to dry naturally before you actually apply the oil.
It is important that you only use a specialist teak oil on the furniture and apply this using a lint free cloth. You could use a spray gun that is filled with the oil but using a cloth will ensure that the oil is spread evenly over the surface of the furniture. Now you need to leave it for sometime until it feels tacky.
Once you feel the oil is tacky you take yet another clean lint free cloth and this one you wipe across the surface of the teak garden furniture in order to remove any excess oil. After this cleaning stage, you leave the wood for a further hour before you then take another clean cloth that is free of lint and this will be used to polish up the surface of the wood and present that golden color you were after.
