It is a horrible thing for families to lose everything when an unexpected disaster strikes their home whether it is from a flood, fire, or other tragedy. Everyone feels so bad for them because many of them end up ruined financially when they have no insurance or just not enough coverage to replace everything and put their lives back the way they were. This is a terrible aspect of a life altering event, but sometimes the consequences can be far more serious than financial loss alone.
For single people or couples who must survive a crisis that destroys their home and belongings are bad enough, but when children are involved it can be much worse on everyone. The one thing that the majority of parents can not bear to see is when their children are hurt or really disturbed about something. It can be horribly upsetting when a child must witness losing all they are accustomed to. To know their home has been washed away or see it go up in smoke is something they will never forget.
For all family members it is hard to be displaced and have to set up house in a strange place out of the blue. The lucky ones will have friends or family they can stay with or their family has savings that allows them to rent a new home temporarily. For those who were already living on a tight budget and just getting by or do not have somewhere specific to go, they might end up living in a shelter for a time until the parents can get back to work and recover.
It can be distressing for everyone living out of suitcases or wearing borrowed or hand me down clothes. Some families have to leave with only the clothes on their back and nothing else. Sometimes a loved one or a family pet can be lost. This is when it can take years to recover emotionally. There is often depression to be dealt with especially by the parents who really have to shoulder all the burdens themselves. It can be hard for a father or mother to have to depend on the charity of others to see them through until they can do better.
Usually families will recover eventually, even though the road back to normal can be harder for some than others. The scars from being traumatized in such a way will be there for all of them for a long time after dealing with this sort of tragedy. Sometimes counseling might be needed to set fears at rest and cope with what has happened.
