Decorating A Bridal Shower

    View:
Historically speaking, the first bridal shower was thrown for a couple in Holland. According to the legend, a young girl fell in love with a mill operator. Despite his charm he was very poor. This did not set well with the bride's father and in an attempt to discourage the union he refused to give the customary bridal dowry. Despite the fathers attempt at dissuasion, the bride continued with her planning despite any consequence. Her beau was apparently a very generous man, always helping others in the community. In an effort to show their appreciation, all of his close friends and family came together to “shower” the new couple with the many items they would need to start their life together. So the beginning of the long standing tradition of the bridal shower and a enchanting story to share with your guests.

Bridal showers are an opportunity for family and friends to show their support for the new couple. They should be fun, practical, and momentous. Here are a few suggestions to ensure the next bridal shower you host will be a delightful occasion.

• First and foremost be creative and unique. Remember the bride during your planning and work to incorporate her style and personality into your shower.

• Select a shower type. There are many types of showers to host. In the past, most bridal showers focused on household items needed to equip the new couple for their life together. Today, many couples have most of what they need so they prefer to have a travel fund shower or a lingerie shower.

• Next, select a location. Showers can be very formal to informal. You may prefer a home, a restaurant, the beach, or a destination that starts the bachelorette party.

• Select a theme that embodies the spirit of the occasion and captures the personality of the bride and your guests. This can be done through the location, food, decorations, and any games or entertainment provided.

• Determine the date and time. Most bridal showers are traditionally given on Sunday, however; your schedule, along with the brides will be a big influence. Typically showers are done anywhere from 2 months to 2 weeks prior to the wedding.

• Prepare to send out invitations. Contact the bride to get an invitation list and also to find out where she is registered. Be creative with your invitations as they can set the stage for your theme. Often it is nice to show where the bride is registered on the invitation.

• Host the shower and enjoy the time together with family and friends!

Decorating A Bridal Shower
Bridal showers are typically held anytime between three weeks and three months before the wedding. You need to set a date, keeping in mind how busy the bride will be from now on. Guests need enough notice as well, since most people are busy these days.

The next step, of course, is developing a guest list. Typically, the Maid of Honor and/or the bridesmaids host the bridal shower. Ask the bride for a list of people she'd like invited to the shower, with their names, addresses and phone numbers. If someone is not invited to the wedding, they should not be included in the shower invitation list. After all, it's insulting to ask someone to bring a gift to the shower if the assumption is that they are not a close enough friend to invite to the wedding. There are some exceptions, such as in the case of a destination wedding or a small wedding with only immediate family invited. Usually, all female relatives on both sides of the family are invited to the shower, as well as the bride's friends.

Food and drink should be next on your list. Since most bridal showers are an afternoon affair, light snacks and perhaps wine would be appropriate. Asking close family to bring a small dish is fine, but do not ask all guests to bring an appetizer or dessert. Most people will be offended to not only be asked to bring a gift but food as well. Be sure to have non-alcoholic drinks on hand.

Finally, it is traditional to play games at a bridal shower. This is a fun way to get guests involved and break the ice between everyone. Most of the games center around the bride, but everyone should be able to get involved. Offering small prizes is also fun for the guests. There are many different types of games that can be played, everything from G rated to R rated. Of course use your discretion depending on who is going to be there! Two to three games is usually enough, and can be used to break up the gift opening if there are many guests to prevent them from getting too bored.

Be aware of a couple of additional protocol issues. The bride's mother does not plan the bridal shower so as to eliminate the appearance of being motivated by a wish to merely get as many gifts as possible. If a guest would like to bring a friend to the shower, politely decline. An explanation about how awkward the guest may feel with family and friends of the bride should be sufficient reasoning to dissuade the most persistent individual. Take plenty of pictures at the bridal shower - the bride will enjoy looking back on a scrapbook of memories of her shower, and the family and friends that gathered together to wish her well.
