Definition Of Alcohol Abuse

    View:
Anyone who has got into the bad habit of abusing alcohol or any other substance has fallen into the category of substance abuse. It is a common event and an expensive pastime and will lead to serious health problems as well has ruining family and other relationships. It is estimated that in the US and Canada alone that 100,000 deaths are caused by the result of alcohol abuse every year.

Alcohol has a really negative on out kids too especially at college and the tendency to smoke and try out other illegal substances. What future will they have with such serious problems at such a young age and to add insult to injury alcohol related motor accidents is the number one cause of death for our teenagers.

If the truth is to be known alcohol or drugs are just a result of the kids being depressed, which is even more common in our over rated society. The problem of alcohol abuse becomes a reality when it begins to interfere with your daily life and you performance is way down. When we refer to alcoholism it is the eventual step of feeling physically or emotionally dependent on alcohol just to get through another day.

Alcohol abuse patterns vary. Some people get drunk every day; others drink large amounts of alcohol at specific times, such as on the weekend. It is common for someone with an alcohol or drug problem to call in sick for work on Monday or Friday.

He or she may complain of having a virus or the flu. Others may be sober for long periods and then go on a drinking binge that lasts for weeks or months. Someone with alcohol dependence may suffer serious withdrawal symptoms, such as trembling, delusions, hallucinations, and sweating, if he or she stops drinking suddenly ("cold turkey"). Once alcohol dependence develops, it becomes very difficult to stop drinking without outside help. Medical detoxification may be needed.

The decision to confront an alcoholic is never an easy one to make. The most important thing is you should never attempt it when the alcoholic is currently under the influence of alcohol. The confrontation should be planned when he or she is sober.

Confronting an alcoholic is sometimes called an intervention and must be carefully planned according to recommended expert guidelines, preferably those issued by a knowledgeable organization like Al-Anon which is the support group for family members of alcoholics.

Another good piece of advice to get through the initial confrontation is to visit the alcoholic's medic in order to get the correct medical advice regarding treatment just so that you really are fully prepared any possible question that mat arise during the conversation. Just to help you on your way we are going to outline 9 great tips which will assist you in convincing the alcoholic to quit alcohol for once and all, which are posted on the stopdrinkingadvice.org blog, so make sure you have a look before arriving at the confrontation stage.
Definition Of Alcohol Abuse
Alcohol abuse can be tough to determine in this day and age. It seems like every 20-something is binge drinking on the weekends. Perhaps it's just a rite of passage? Likewise, it seems like all your coworkers are slamming back a few brews after work to let loose. Where does one draw the line between normal and excessive alcohol consumption?

While tolerance levels vary, the general rule is that you're drinking too much if you're a woman who has more than 7 drinks per week or more than 3 drinks per occasion, if you're a man who has more than 14 drinks per week or more than four drinks per occasion, or if you're over 65 having more than 7 drinks per week or more than 3 drinks per occasion.

Can problem drinkers simply cut down on alcohol consumption to combat their abuse of it? The answer to this popular question all depends upon the individual. For the most successful recovery from alcoholism, abstinence is really the only cure.

On the other hand, people who have experienced drinking related problems, but aren't actually alcohol dependent, may be able to cut back on their own. Before hitting "rock bottom," it's recommended that the drinkers stop covering up their alcohol consumption, read information on alcoholism to assess the situation and avoid situations where it will be involved.

Some of the physical symptoms of alcohol abuse emerge over time in some of the more advanced stages. Common symptoms include "the shakes," nausea, nervousness, anxiety, sweating and depression. Often there is a loss of appetite and the individual needs to drink more and more to sustain a buzz.

Cravings may drive the person to drinking alcohol every weekend or even every day. Delirium Tremens (DTs) is the ultimate manifestation of severe alcohol abuse, with the drinker suffering hallucinations, nausea, agitation, confusion, the shakes and panic attacks from alcohol related withdrawal. In 5-15% of these cases, the person may die unless treated by a medical professional.

The good news is that people with addictions can be treated if they're willing to accept help. For the most severe recovering alcoholic, alcohol abuse can be treated with drugs that will reduce cravings and elevate mood levels. Scientists say alcoholism is perpetuated by imbalances of neurotransmitters and brain chemicals that leave a person feeling unsatisfied without alcoholic drink.

Some drugs include Campral, Vivitrex, Naltrexone and Antabuse. It's highly recommended that the recovering alcoholic also undergo behavioral therapy or attend the Alcoholics Anonymous 12-step program as well.
