Many things about preparing for a job with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) are just like preparing for other jobs. However, defense jobs do have several unique aspects and requirements, some of which might not be immediately obvious. Here are some things you should do before attempting to get a job with the DoD.
1. Be prepared to fill out a lot of forms and deal with a certain amount of bureaucracy. The application process may take several months, depending on the job.
2. Live responsibly. Many defense jobs require a security background investigation. A dishonest or irresponsible past could wreck your chances of a career with the DoD.
3. Understand the Defense Department's purpose: to protect our country's security at home and abroad. Your job would be to support that aim in a specific field.
4. Get appropriate training in your chosen field. The better trained and educated you are, the better defense job you can get. Your transcripts or resume will be important, but the DoD will also test your skills to make sure you really know your stuff.
5. Be honest about mistakes you have made in the past.
6. Stay as healthy as you can. This is especially important if you want to join one of the military services.
