1.Pressure Vessels:



A Pressure Vessel is a closed, rigid container designed to hold gases or liquids at a pressure different from the ambient pressure.

Pressure Vessels are usually spherical or cylindrical with domed ends.

Pressure Vessels are provided with openings or nozzles with facility for making threaded or flanged joints.

Examples of Pressure Vessels are: diving cylinder, recompression chamber, distillation towers, autoclaves and many other vessels in mining or oil refineries and petrochemical plants, nuclear reactor vessel, habitat of a space ship, habitat of a submarine, pneumatic reservoir, hydraulic reservoir under pressure, rail vehicle airbrake reservoir, road vehicle airbrake reservoir and storage vessels for liquefied gases such as ammonia, chlorine, propane, butane and LPG.Visit us at www.metalplants.com

2.Reaction Vessels / Reactors:

Pressure Vessels are used as Reaction Vessels or Kettles for carrying out operations such as blending, dispersion, gas absorption, dissolution, batch distillation etc under controlled conditions.

The Reaction Vessels (Reactors) may be open with loose cover or closed with head that can be tightly secured to the shell so that reaction can be carried out under controlled pressure & temperature.

The Reaction Vessel (Reactor) required to withstand high pressure and temperatures, that must be maintained at constant values during the reaction process is called an Autoclave.

Depending on the Processing operation, the Reaction Vessel (Reactor) may require heating, cooling and agitation of the contents.

Agitation of the Reaction Vessel (Reactor) contents is a requirement in a number of processing operations; both heat and mass transfer are greatly influenced by agitation or mixing.

Agitated Reaction Vessels (Reactors) may be divided into three main classes: batch Reactors, continuous flow Reactors and semi batch Reactors.

3.Heat Exchangers:

The device used for transferring or exchanging energy in the form of heat between two fluids is known as Heat Exchanger.

The heat exchange can be either by direct or indirect method and could be classified as fired or unfired.

Heat Exchangers can be classified by different methods:

4.Storage Tanks:

Liquid and gaseous products must be stored during intervals between, production, transportation, refining, blending & marketing.

The object of storage at each of these stages is firstly to supply sufficient balance of each stock to ensure continuity of operation, and secondly to ensure that the product is conserved and maintained at an acceptable level of quality.

Storage Tanks of small capacity are shop fabricated and large sized at site.

Storage Tanks of capacity up to 70000L.

Storage Tanks which are horizontal or vertical, with fixed or floating roofs, with or without saddle, skirt or legs supports for under or over ground applications.

Storage Tanks can also be supplied with side entry agitators.

5.Column:

Distillation (fractionation) and Absorption are the two most widely used mass transfer unit operations in the chemical industry.

Distillation is performed at higher than ambient temperatures involving wide range of pressures; the absorption systems may involve cryogenic conditions and super atmospheric pressures.

Distillation & Absorption Columns though apparently different operations are performed, the mass transfer contacting devices are the same in both cases.

Distillation and Absorption Column, also known as Tower is essentially a tall vertical cylindrical shell, with a number of nozzles & internals.

The Towers / Columns may be divided into two types based on contacting device used for mass transfer, viz.

Plate / Tray Columns: The perforated plate holds the liquid and gas is sparged through this pool of liquid. The various devices in practice are bubble cap tray, valve tray, sieve plate etc

Packed Columns: These Columns are filled with proprietary packing such as Raschig rings, Pall rings, Intalox saddles, Cascade mini rings, Structured Packings etc.

6.Evaporators:

Evaporators are used in the industry or Concentrating liquids.

The evaporation is performed by use of low pressure, dry saturated steam, for special purpose organic vapors or fuel gases may be adopted. In most cases water, which is a solvent, is evaporated. With the vaporization of a part of the water, the useful product is a concentrated solution.

In majority of the Evaporators the heat transfer is through tubular surfaces. The body of the evaporator is in the form of a cylindrical shell, in which the tubes are placed. In order to create effective heat transfer, the liquid must flow across the heat transfer surface.

Evaporators can be classified according to the heating medium, heating surface and its disposition and the method of circulation, broadly based on the construction they are as under:

7.Hydro or Steam Distillation Systems:

Essential Oils represent the essential aroma of the plant from which they are obtained.

The majority of essential oils are produced by the process of Steam or Hydro distillation of botanicals or herbal materials.

Essential Oils occur in many parts of the plants, eg roots (vetiver), bark (cinnamon), heartwood (sandalwood), leaves (bay), herb (peppermint), seeds (nutmeg), flowers (jasmine),

Principle: In processing, steam forms a constant boiling mixture with oils, which collectively boils at a temperature below that of steam. Hence the passage of steam through a bed of plant material causes the volatiles to distill over the steam. When the condensate cools, the oils, relatively insoluble in water, separate from the aqueous phase forming two layers, which can be easily be separated.

There are two basic types of essential oil Distillation System, viz.

Hydro Distillation System,

Steam Distillation System
