Diet For Adhd Children

    View:
I bet that many parents who have children who suffer from ADHD think that diet is marginal and that an ADHD diet can only make life more complicated than it really is! Let me try and persuade you that the food children eat really does have an impact on their development and especially as regards hyperactivity and other related ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) problems.

I want to list some of the research studies done in this area and if you already are converted, you can take a pat on the back. If you are skeptical, you may want to reflect on the information here. As a parent you may be concerned that you are not getting all the information you need. This article has been written with the purpose of giving clearer guidelines .

We now know that there is a lack of essential minerals and vitamins in many children's diets. This is mainly due to snack and junk foods. The main ones lacking are magnesium, amino acids, vitamin C, omega 3, iron and zinc. In one research project a group of children were given 200mg of magnesium for a trial period of six months. A second group were given the usual placebo. At the end of the trial period, there was notable reduction in hyperactivity and restlessness in the group who had been given magnesium. Similar results were found for all the other essential minerals mentioned above.

A few studies have been done to show that an excess of sugar can lead to hyperactivity and impulsiveness. Even though these studies are somewhat controversial, we will be doing our children a great favour in reducing sugar intake to avoid other problems like obesity and diabetes. Sugary drinks like Gatorade and other pop should be replaced with water.

The British Food Agency carried out a large scale study and they found that certain colourings and additives (E102, E104 and E110 in particular) found in children's snacks were to blame for increased hyperactivity and other attention deficit disorders. This received a lot of attention in the press recently and raised awareness of the importance of an ADHD diet.

We should help our children to avoid exposure to certain metals and aluminum. Tooth fillings (the amalgam type) and even crowns and dental braces are known to contain certain metals such as nickel, cadmium and mercury which is the most toxic of all.

Omega 3 is contained in fish, fish oils, borage oils and also flax seed oils. When you are preparing food, you can easily add them, eg, as salad dressings.

Do you need more help with ADHD? If you are unsure where to turn and what treatment is valid, you should bear in mind the FDA warning about psychostimulants which are often prescribed without sufficient guidelines eg. these drugs have possible cardiovascular risks and risks of adverse psychiatric symptoms! For more advice you should visit the site below which will help you through the ADHD jungle including advice on medication and a suitable diet for ADHD.
Diet For Adhd Children
A child who suffers from ADHD is hyperactive and diet plays a rather significant part in their behaviour as well as the severity of the symptoms. Observe for yourself the link between certain food stuffs and their behaviour, perhaps keeping a diary so you can identify and record what food types causes the worst reactions. Eventually you can prepare a good food menu for adhd child.

Sadly, many parents with children suffering from ADHD are not aware that diet for adhd children plays a part in the symptoms and that there are a huge number of resources such as recipes to better manage a child with ADHD. Some may be asking "Is there a list of foods good for adhd child?" or "Is there a recommended diet for adhd?"

Hence, the following is a checklist of dietary things to do and not to do when preparing diet for children with adhd :

DON'TS:

1. Avoid processed foods which contain additives and preservatives.

2. Cut out diary products from the child's diet, so milk, cheese, yoghurt and the like must all be removed.

3. Cut down on fizzy and carbonated drinks, and drinks which are heavy in sugar.

4. Fruit juices should be avoided as well, these are saturated in sugar.

5. Avoid junk food which has all the nasty hallmarks of processed foods.

6. Cut down on the child's sugar intake, and make sure to carefully monitor how much he does have. Why not try a healthy snack such as a banana or sunflower seeds as opposed to a candy bar?

7. Use only fresh meat, and avoid processed meat as these will be full of additives and preservatives.

8. Don't let him eat any fried products like potato chips etc.

9. Make sure your child doesn't snack in between meals, otherwise he will spoil his appetite.

10. Don't try and coerce or intimidate your child into eating more healthily, try and reason with them. If you take a heavy handed approach, the child will most likely rebel and become even more belligerent.

DO'S:

1. Try and use organic products, organic foods strive to be free from the chemicals and pesticides used in ordinary food and the high level of chemicals present in such foods are certainly not good for anyone!

2. Make sure that your child drinks plenty of water.

3. Make sure that your child eats plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. .

4. Give him a wide selection of foods, this option to choose what to eat will encourage your child to widen his diet and try new things.

5. Use diet and nutrition supplements to give you're a child a boost, but always make sure to consult with your doctor before doing so.

6. Nourish your child with flax seed or primrose oil. High sources of Omega oils. Borage oils and some fish oils are good as well. Very important. Mix about a spoonful a day into foods as you prepare them, or add to salad dressings, etc.

7. Make sure to encourage your child for their commitment to giving up the foods they like most.
