For only about 50% of the uric acid produced within the body the source are the purines. The remaining uric acid breaks down from other sources within the body. A low purine diet is prescribed. But unfortunately this diet omits organ meats like liver, kidney, sweetbreads, brains, meat gravies and extracts, sardines, herring, mackerel, scallops.



The following foods are allowed once per day: meat, fish, poultry, dried beans and peas, asparagus, mushrooms, spinach. The painful feet experience might be the cause of gout. The acidity of urine excreted by the kidneys is due to the presence of high level of uric acidity. This develops the possibility of kidney stones. Additional water helps to ease the secretion of uric acid.

The use of medication to increase excretion of uric acid is a current therapy. It is well known the Recommended Dietary Allowance of protein (RDA)- 50 grams for females and 63 grams for males. For overweight persons is recommended the weight reduction. A drastic dieting or fasting increases blood uric acid levels. For this one a greater quantity of ketone is produced. These ketone bodies inhibit uric acid excretion.

Generally persons with gout have a very low calorie (less than 900 calories per day) which can cause the uric acid levels to go higher. Attacks of gout may be precipitate by consuming alcohol. Alcohol dehydrates the body of water and increase its uric acid levels. So the consume of alcohol should be avoid. When symptoms of gout appear a doctor should be consult. Till seeing the doctor a low purine diet can be take for a few days.

Persons with gout should avoid the following purine foods: liver, kidneys, sweetbreads, brains, meat gravies and extracts, anchovies, mackerel, sardines, herring, scallops, dried beans and peas.
