If you have been paying attention to what has been happening in the motivational world you will know that the big hit has been the movie “The Secret". It received every kind of response imaginable. There are those who immediately embraced everything about it. Then at the opposite end of the response spectrum were those who consider it nothing more than hocus-pocus and should be avoided at all costs.

Do we have any responsibility as to how the world will treat us? Does it matter what I think? Won’t things just happen to us and we have no control over those things? It sure makes life a lot easier for me if I don’t have to take responsibility for my thoughts and attitudes. I can just let life go on and I can blame the government, my boss, etc. Ever notice how blame never changes your situation in life? Blaming my teachers never improved the amount of knowledge I have.

Maybe we should stop for a moment and ask ourselves what is an attitude? The attitude is an inward feeling expressed by an outward action or behavior. Attitudes can be seen without a word being spoken. You can look at someone and generally tell what their attitude is. Especially if their facial expressions are a pout, or sour, or dark. When you see someone like that don’t you usually try to avoid them until they are in a better mood?

Since an attitude often is expressed by our body language and by the looks on our faces, it can be contagious. Have you noticed what happens to a group of people when one person, by his expression, reveals a negative attitude? Or have you noticed the lift you receive when a friend’s facial expression shows love and acceptance?

Your attitude determines your approach to life. One of the valid ways to test your attitude is to answer this question: do you feel your world is treating you well? Look around you. Analyze the conversations of people. If you always speak negatively and hang around with people who are negative don’t be surprised by the prison of discontent that you have built for yourself.

The world doesn’t care whether we free ourselves form this prison or not. The world marches on. Adopting a good, healthy attitude toward life does not affect society nearly so much as it effects us. The change cannot come from others. It must come from us.

Your attitude determines your relationships with people. The Golden Rule states: “Therefore, however you want people to treat you, so treat them." People are a funny creature. They want a place in the front of the bus, the back of the church, and the middle of the road. Tell a man there are 300 billion plus stars and he’ll believe you. Tell that same man that a bench has just been painted, and he ahs to touch it to be sure.

The Standford Research Institute says that the money you make in any endeavor is determined only 12.5 percent by knowledge and 87.5 percent by your ability to deal with people. Your ability to deal with people is affected by your attitude – your attitude toward yourself and others. It is almost impossible to be successful in the business world today with a bad attitude. You want to be successful check your attitude!
