Dog Agility Training Tips

    View:
As a rule, agility trainingshould start while the pet is still a puppy. However, owners could stillfacilitate training with older dogs. The question "when is the dogconsidered old for agility training" is central to choosing when to starttraining the dog.

Being "old" greatlyvaries from dog to dog, from the extent of a dog's experience to the innate andnatural tendencies it has. In short, there is no specific age at which the dogshould be restrained from training.

However it is always fareasier to start training with much younger dogs since their learned behaviorsare still not rooted into their habits.

For choosing old dogs fortraining, the handler should not create the impression that the dog would nolonger learn so there's no need to waste time. The attitude of the dog as muchas that of the trainer is both highly essential to faster learning. The morededicated and patient the owner is the faster the dog learns.

There are several approachesto starting training for agility. A few of which are discussed here briefly:

Physical exercise

The introduction to agilitytraining should start with physical exercises. If the handler has enoughinterest to dedicate on training the dog, the age will no longer matter for itis the condition that will rule over. Simple exercises like jumping or hoppingmay agitate the dog and encourage him to move a little bit. For puppies, theseexercises are much easier to do since they have enough energy to use.

Let him play around

Like teaching littlechildren, the easiest approach to agility training for younger puppies is toturn the exercises into a series of games. The majority of puppies are capableof passing through tunnels and chutes so take advantage of this chance and introducethe tunnels, obstacles and the training area itself as huge play ground.

This approach will createpositive impressions on him which will also prepare him for future training.

Promote his agility

If you don't have asufficient area for setting up obstacle courses, it is best to use certaingames that also encourage agility. Simple equipment like improvised tunnels orwalls could be made to augment training.

Keep it short

Dogs don't experience passionwhen it comes to activities but they have the innate desire to please theirowners. This means that they don't get devoted unless they are rewarded forgood actions they have made and that you show your favor for their actions.Their attention span is also very limited so they could not continue trainingfor extended hours.

If you want to start trainingyour dog for agility, establish the rule that you should keep each trainingsession and each lesson as short as possible. You don't have to finisheverything in one sitting. You should divide each exercise into sections thatthe dog could easily understand. Also never end with a negative note. Alwaysensure that the dog finishes each exercise with praise.

Training your dog for agilitydoes not lie on how old or young he is, it lies in the foundation ofresponsiveness, independence, drive to work alone and to follow the command, and your desire to work with him with enough patience and knowledge of hiscapacities.
Dog Agility Training Tips
If you love dogs, training them will be a pleasant way of spending your free time. Considering the phases that you will have to do when it comes to agility training, it would be good if you can have somebody to assist you. Doing some brush up research relating to agility training of dogs using the Internet will help you acquire more knowledge with regards to this kind of training. In the internet you can find all sorts of agility training tips. There are many free dog training tips on the net, if you are lucky you might find some free dog training videos or even a free dog training manual.

If you are planning to enter your dog in a competition, you have to hire a real dog trainer. Ordinary agility training for dogs will not do if you are in a competition. On the other hand, if your purpose of training your dog for agility is only for enjoyment and to keep your dog in better shape, it will help you to know some things about dog training, particularly in terms of improving your dog's agility.

Your dog's safety should always be your primary concern when it comes to dog agility training. In this regard, you have to ensure that everything relative to your dog's safety has been checked and double checked before you start the training.

Do not expect your dog to do super dog acts, like jumping from a high elevation or passing through barbed wires. Your dog is limited to what it can do, so the agility training exercises for your dog should be reasonable and challenging for your dog, not impossible and dangerous for him to do.

Did you know that there are specific dog breeds that can't do a lot of jumping? Basically, dog agility training should be made according to breed, age and health condition of the dog. Make sure you research this area thoroughly or ask a professional dog trainer.

Understanding that dog training will take time, effort and patience on your part will lead to more smooth agility training. Your understanding of this kind of dog training should likewise involve self assessment of your efforts like asking yourself what is wrong with how you conduct the training and then experimenting with another way to get the best result.

Teaching your dog agility is not an overnight course. Basically it takes time and requires a lot of patience on the part of the trainer. You will also need to have access to certain agility training equipment and agility training supplies.

Chances are that most of the agility training equipment will be provided by the trainer at the agility course, if you decide to hire a trainer, but you might need some agility home build equipment and agility supplies to practice the agility exercises and agility drills at home. Don't be disappointed with your dog if it cannot perform a task like not being able to jump higher. Instead of putting the burden and pressure on the dog, ask yourself what's wrong with the way you are handling the training.

Do not ever use fixed bars or structures during training as this might injure your dog. For jumping, use a bar with somebody holding the other end with the other end free so as not to harm your dog if ever he cannot clear the bar. Always try to think of any possible areas wherein your dog might get hurt and act on it before it is too late.

Dogs are like us humans. We have good moods and we have bad moods and so do dogs. You have to understand this situation and act accordingly to address them. Giving them food and letting them rest might do the trick.

The usual motivation in dog training is by giving them food every time they accomplish a given task. If they fail, you still give them food but in a much smaller amount than if they successfully passed a task. Like for example, the day the dog does not do very well, you might decide to not give him any additions treats. This will make them understand the benefit of doing a task correctly. Praise and pat your dog on its head; that will make him feel good every time he finishes a task. Food, however, is the most effective factor in motivating dogs.
