In the recent times, a different type of bike has been developed that is designed for using any kind of track, whether it is mountainous or rocky, or it is a path with steep gradient, dirt trails or any other unpaved tracks. These are known as mountain bikes or all terrain bikes that are better known in the short name of MTB or ATB. These are quite different from ordinary road bikes or racing bikes in their design. They are designed for more rugged use so that it could withstand different kinds of adverse impacts it would face during off-road use. Because of this reasons, the frames of mountain bikes are designed in a different way from other types of bikes so that it could tackle obstacles of log or rocks in case they come in the way of the cycle ride. Most of these mountain bikes are fitted with 26 inch bicycle wheels fitted with wide tires with treads to provide extra grip, along with better capacity of withstanding shock. Newer mountain bikes are being provided with front wheel suspension. This new feature has been introduced since 2000.These newer bikes are also being provided with full front and rear suspension more or less as a standard feature. Some mountain bikes are also provided with bar ends on handlebars so that extra leverage could be obtained during the climbing of the hill.
The sport of mountain biking has started to develop since the 1970s. As this sport has developed, different types of mountain bikes have been developed to meet the demand of this sport. These types include cross-country bikes, endurance bikes, downhill mountain bikes and many other types that have been developed to enable to participate in various types track and slalom competition. Different demands are made on the bike by these different types of mountain bikes. Because of this reason, different designs have been developed to suit the different conditions under which the bikes are ridden. For this reason, some of these mountain bikes are being provided with a large number of gears to enable a biker to ride the mountain bike in 21 to 27 different speeds, so that they get help while taking bike ride uphill or downhill. Most of the higher-end mountain bikes are now provided with disc brakes instead of cantilever or V-brakes that is usually used in any ordinary bike. This has provided these bikes with better ability to stop under extreme conditions.
All these features of a mountain bikes has made riding on a hill road as truly thrilling and adventurous experience
Down Hill Mountain Bikes
Mountain bike riders must have shock system type of bikes that include full suspension and hard tail and even no suspension. The shock system is important as because it helps to absorb the impact over rugged terrain that provide a smoother ride. Full suspension bikes got suspension in both the front and the rear of the bike. Hard tail bikes have solid rear fork and shock system in place of the front fork. Mountain bikes with lower end models do not have a shock system in the front or in the back of the bike.
Types of Mountain Bikes to Enjoy
Mountain bikes for cross-country riders are ideal for small to moderate train and they got both climbing and descending capabilities as well. The travel in the rear suspension system is less than four inches that does not hinder the ability to climb hills. The standard numbers of gears on cross-country bikes are 28 providing a wide range of gears suitable for the traveling over varied terrain.
In mountain bikes, trail bikes are more substantial than cross country bikes as they are intended for use for more technical mountain bike rides. The travel in suspension systems used on these bikes ranges is from 4-7 inches. This increased travel allows for a very smoother ride but makes pedaling uphill more difficult too. Mountain bikers have to weigh the decreased pedal efficiency versus a smoother ride.
The down hill mountain bikes detailed with the front and rear shock that have up to eight inches of travel. These bikes are specifically designed to do downhill racing. The amount of travel in the suspension systems makes it difficult to pedal uphill, for this reason these bikes are used almost exclusively for the downhill races where the shock systems allows smooth possible ride over harsh terrain at high speeds also.
Dirt jump bikes are one more verity in mountain bikes, which have only a front suspension system and used for flying over jumps. They have 16 gears in these bikes which allows the rider to build up the speed they need while making jumps.
