This has certainly been another dim week for the T-Mobile professional cycling team; after the German cyclist, Patrik Sinkewitz made some revealing doping confessions reason for which he was dismissed last July from the team. Besides admitting to have used the banned blood booster EPO (erythropoietin) given to him by two former team doctors, Sinkewitz provided vital information regarding the doping condition among team mates and other related sources as he was seeking for a penalty decrease in exchange.
Besides Sinkewitz as the most recent case there are other names which are also involved in the doping scaldal among which are: German Jan Ullrich 1997 Tour de France winner, the Ukrainian Serhiy Honchar and under current investigation Canberra’s three time cycling world champion Italian Michael Rogers.
After all this doping controversy, one of the team main sponsors; Adidas Sportswear has announced they would end their current contract with T-Mobile by the end of 2008. "Adidas condemns doping in any form and will in the future remain faithful to its principle of terminating contracts with sportsmen who are using dope," stressed the German company.
Undeniably, this add more tension to the already existing dreadful situation the team is going through, as for many years these team have relied on the multimillion support provided by strong company such as Adidas. It is still uncertain whether Deutsche Telekom will continue its 10 million Euros ($A15.86 million) a year sponsorship of the team.
Over the past months, T-Mobile new management has eagerly tried to shift their path in order to be able to continue the team’s professional career. They have established new doping regulations, they have improved procedures to prevent further doing cases; there are new names of cyclists on their lists and are providing all the tools to clear past involvements of their previous cyclists and doctors. But, all these efforts continue to be diminished by the constant problems which persist to arise.
What the future holds for the team is entirely uncertain, but it does seen the road ahead will be very difficult and there will be many more obstacles to overcome.
