Drug Abuse And Treatment

    View:
The drug abuse epidemic has gotten so serious that there are now approximately 10,000 rehabilitation and treatment centers in the US. The cause of drug abuse is said to be an inability to cope with life's difficulties in a healthy manner, resulting in an attempt to self-medicate through the use of drugs. If the drug is addictive, then the addiction becomes an additional, independent cause of drug abuse.

Many factors must be considered when determining drug abuse treatment options - insurance coverage, cost, additional like family support services, group therapy, 24-hour medical care, post-discharge monitoring and support, etc.)

Drug abuse treatment can be divided into 3 categories: outpatient, inpatient (short-term) treatment, and long-term residential treatment. With inpatient and residential treatment, follow-up outpatient treatment is usually offered to ensure that the patient does not lapse.

Outpatient Treatment: This usually involves medication that reduces the desire for drugs and inhibits withdrawal symptoms (Methadone, for example), and counseling.

Inpatient Treatment: This is usually short-term and conducted in a hospital or similar environment. It uses a 12-step program similar to Alcoholics Anonymous. A drug known as Naltrexone is used for detoxification and withdrawal symptoms. Counseling is a necessary supplement to Naltrexone.

Residential Treatment: This is reserved for abusers with serious problems. It is offered in an atmosphere that resembles a home rather than a hospital. Treatment is usually for six to twelve months. Treatment includes medication, group therapy, and individual counseling. These patients usually have serious habits aggravated by mental health problems that are treated alongside the drug abuse treatment. Counseling is often confrontational and aims to re-socialize the patient (some call it brainwashing). Some treatment centers also offer occupational therapy. Available Counseling methods generally include therapeutic community group therapy and cognitive therapy. Occasionally other forms of therapy such as reality therapy may be offered. The purpose of residential treatment is to remove the patient from his usual surroundings, provide round the clock counseling support, and encourage the formation of supportive bonds with other patients.
Drug Abuse And Treatment
Throughout the state program for drug abuse treatment in Ohio, you will find that the family of the patient is given a lot of importance. The program understands quite well that the family is one of the strongest support systems to get the patient out of an addiction and into a manageably controlled sober life. Right from the beginning of the treatment to the end, the family becomes an important force. Here are the ways in which the family becomes essential in drug abuse treatment in Ohio.

Convincing the Patient to get into Treatment

The first contribution of the family is in convincing the patient to get into treatment. Almost everyone who is into an addiction treatment center in Ohio today was in denial at some state of the treatment. This denial needs to be removed. For that, the family can plan an intervention program and help in motivating and encouraging the patient to get into treatment. The family intervention program is quite elaborate in this context. Under the guidance of an intervention specialist, three to seven people from the family (and even some close friends) can come forward and prepare a plan by which they can effectively motivate the patient for the treatment. This is usually done in the form of carefully prepared speeches which are rehearsed in the presence of the interventionist. It may require several attempts to convince the patient for the treatment.

Deciding the Mode of Treatment for the Patient

The next important step of the family intervention in Ohio is to decide what form of treatment would be the most suitable for the patient. For this, the family intervention group will do its own research and ask the guidance of the intervention specialist. The specialist would assess the situation of the patient and then decide what would be the most appropriate mode of treatment for them. The family intervention group would then combine these suggestions with their own research and use the right kind of treatment given the patient's nature and extent of addiction.

Keeping in Tune with the Addiction Treatment Program

Families have to make sure that they keep in touch with the treatment center as the program is going on. In most cases, the patients would be taken into an inpatient treatment center, but even then it would be necessary for the families to know the progress of the treatment. They could directly communicate with representatives of the treatment center, or if it is too inconvenient for them, the intervention specialist could provide the families with the updates on the progress of the treatment.

Here, families need to be advised and coached on how they should handle the addiction treatment program. This is important because there have been many cases in which the patients have urged their families to take them back home midway during the treatment. Families are told to anticipate such situations and how they must handle it carefully considering long term benefits for the patient and not just short term convenience.

In addition, the families also need to be counseled on how they should cope with the situation themselves. An addiction treatment can be too taxing on the family members and it becomes even more so when the main breadwinner of the house is into such a treatment. In that case, there could be several problems the families might have to face and the emotional issues they can create are not the least of them. The counseling treatments will advise families on how they can better face the situation without developing problems for themselves.

Relapse Prevention Participation

The family is a vital force in the relapse prevention program which is a part of the aftercare in the addiction treatment program in Ohio. Here, the family intervention in Ohio is trained how they should help the patient keep away from the substance for as long as possible. Families are trained how they can monitor the patient and how they can read signs and symptoms that can indicate if a relapse into the addiction is going to happen. They are also trained in what they can do if such a relapse is indeed happening so that it is treated as soon and as effectively as possible.

Most groups for family intervention in Ohio are allowed to attend a three-day counseling program when the patient is about to be discharged. Here, families of all the patients at the treatment center are invited at one time. So, this becomes a good platform for families to share their common experiences and seek solutions from them.
