The idea of “addiction intervention" is turning into a substantial way discussing the problems of drug addiction. To make it short, this procedure is used to perform drug abuse treatments on the drug abused and to reduce the harmful effects of the drugs to the body of the patient. In fact, the government of UK introduced this system in 2003.
It is essential to discuss a little about drug addiction before elaborating on addiction interventions. It must be remembered that addiction to harmful drugs is a complete pathological state. The addiction causes lots of diseases which include the development of drug-seeking behaviors, the vulnerability to disintegration of the bodily systems, and the potentiality of lagging the natural human ability to answer back in any case. Interestingly, in the fourth edition of Diagnostic & Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders or DMS the phases of addiction are grouped into three major categories. The divisions of addiction are apprehension or preoccupation, intoxication or binge, and negative or withdrawal effect. These phases rely on the amount of the drugs supplied in the human body. Due to the first cause a person indulges himself all the way to addiction. The second stage is the early stage of the addiction. The third stage implies that the addiction is in the most critical stage and that it requires treatment. And also, the third case demonstrates that the normal human life is very much restricted.
The substances which are the causes of the addiction, are normally categorized into four different groups. They are stimulants, depressants, opiates, and the anabolic steroids. Among the stimulants, the most notable drugs are amphetamine, caffeine, cocaine, and nicotine. Some notable depressants are liquor, barbiturates, benzodiazepins (such as alprazolam, temazepam, nimetazepam, and clonazepam etc. Among the opiates, the notable ones are morphine, codeine, heroin, hydromorphone, oxycodone, methadone, meperidine, and fentanyl. Several drugs are now abused, which are not recommended by any physician.
The first thing to remember regarding the addictive intervention is that this technique is not something to be conducted alone. In maximum cases, the friends and the family members cannot convince the person with addiction problems to quit the habit of addiction. That is why a professional person is selected to convince him to quit drug addiction. The professional usually assists the patient through many steps. Now, it is essential for the family members and the friends of the addictive person to accompany him to the professional person. Several institutions present in every state and cities nowadays that provide addiction intervention services without any additional fees. You just need to give them a call based on your needs. The professional person who is selected to conduct the addiction intervention is sometimes called as the counselor.
It is known that addiction intervention techniques are the combined effort of a lot of people. The sole objective of an addiction intervention is to persuade the person with addiction issues to give up the habit of addiction and to head towards recovery. Now, it should be noted that the addiction intervention is not the process to treat the person with addiction problems or to detoxify the body of the person with addiction problems from the illegal drugs he took in earlier. The intervention techniques can only convince him to lead a better life and to convince him for further treatments. Now, there are several ways of advising or intervening. There are times when the intervention is performed in a residential basis. In this case, the patient is admitted to a non-medical center, and his treatments are done along with the intervention techniques. There are time when, In some cases, the intervention techniques are carried on in an addiction treatment facility. As demonstrated by statistics, addiction intervention is the most efficient means of drug recovery programs. The patients are known to lead happy lives after undergoing the addiction intervention programs for drug addiction recovery.
(1) The first thing to do is to try calling a certain institution that provides the service of addiction intervention.
(2) In the second stage the counselor will discuss with the family members and the friends of the addictive person. During that period, he will enquire regarding the history of the addictive person and all the stories regarding his addictive nature. They will collect all other details, which are essential for the intervention.
(3) The third stage is the most important one. In this case, the people who will be included in the entire course of the addiction intervention along with the counselor are chosen. The people should be carefully picked. Usually, the group consists of the the loved ones of the person with an addiction problem.
(4) In stage four, the outline regarding the addiction intervention is drawn. The method is devised after studying the details which the counselor gathered during the advising phase with the family members and the friends of the addictive person. The chosen group of people also has an important duty in the intervention along with the counselor.
(5) In the fifth step, the chalked plan is performed. The enforcement and the advising should be flawless and all members of the selected group has to help in this plight. If needed, the counselor will teach the group members regarding their task in the intervention.
(6) In six, the result is clearly noticed and the patients will be freed from their addictive disposition.
In the end, it should be informed that people who abuse illegal substances should have the support from the members of their family and the community to motivate him throughout the extent of intervention.
Drug And Alcohol Policies
Before one can understand any behavior, including addictive behavior, it is imperative to understand that feelings truly dictate our actions. Consider the fact that most people probably have brand name toothpaste or soap in their bathroom. Although everyone intellectually knows that generic toothpaste, for example, is basically the same as (and less expensive than) brand name, people often pay more for the brand name, because they feel that it will provide them with "fresher breath and whiter teeth."
Advertisers trick our emotional selves into feeling good about their product, over their competitor's or generic, often causing a behavioral change to spend more for their product. Self-directed use of this basic "Psych 101" principle is essential to empower personal, healthy change, especially with respect to recovery.
The tangible losses associated with addiction are often readily apparent. Crime and the eventual losses of health, jobs, family, friends, and money are only the manifestations of a more intangible loss, which is likely the real culprit behind abuse: loss of one's self through the insidious and consistent detachment of one's feelings through addiction.
Feelings serve the useful purpose of guiding one toward better understanding oneself and one's actions. The avoidance of feelings (particularly through addiction) robs oneself of the valuable, directional information which feelings can afford. A "gut instinct," for instance, can be viewed as a crystallization of all of one's life experiences into a single guiding feeling. Nobody can be consciously aware of every life experience, as it may relate to a presenting concern. One can, however, benefit from one's guiding feeling.
Addiction has the real potential to dull this and other types of valuable feelings, which can ultimately, further alienate the addict from him or herself and others, leading to confusion, poor direction, and despair. This cycle can continue to create a pattern that can lead to the more tangible aforementioned losses. Education (whether through the media, therapy, or the like) is key to breaking this pattern and changing ultimate despair into real hope for the future.
Within recovery, it is also important to note that human behavior is fundamentally structured to pursue pleasure and avoid pain. Therefore, any behavior can actually be changed within an instant. The cocaine addict would instantly quit, if each thought of cocaine were coupled with an electric shock, while each moment of abstinence were followed by a reward of a million dollars. Of course, this type of pain / pleasure is impossible. Therefore, treatment consists of helping the person in recovery to pair the real, emotional pain associated with dependence, combined with the real, emotional pleasure associated with sobriety, in order to motivate recovery.
