European Capital Of Culture

    View:
The city Liverpool has a startling range of attractions. It has been awarded the Capital Of Culture. The architecture is world class, with more listed buildings then any city outside London. The heart of the city and its waterfront sit proudly alongside treasures like the Taj Mahal and Pyramids at Giza as a World Heritage Site. Whether its art and culture, sport or family outings youll be spoilt for choice.

The second city of the British Empire port, provided the gateway to Britain, and a window to the rest of the world, culminating in the vibrant, diverse, international city Liverpool is today.

A trip across the river on the world famous Mersey Ferry offers the most dramatic views of the waterfront, Three Graces the Liver Building, Cunard Building and Port of Liverpool Building. On the Wirral side of the river, you can find the stunning new Spaceport attraction at the Seacombe ferry terminal.

The city Liverpool is celebrating its eight hundred birthday this year, 2007. As part of the celebrations it will be hosting a variety of heritage themed events, festivals, performances, debates, exhibitions, lectures and films.

The European Capital of Culture in 2008 Liverpool is a must see destination for all culture vultures.

The city boasts two Cathedrals which are major attractions in their own right. The Anglican Cathedral and the Metropolitan Cathedral are fine examples of internationally recognised architecture.

Spend a morning at the new World Museum Liverpool. Art lovers shouldnt miss the Walker Art Gallery and Tate Liverpool.

Trace the thread of maritime history through Liverpool, starting at the Merseyside Maritime Museum.

Take a wander through central Liverpool, stopping at the new Met Quarter, home to a host of designer stores in Liverpool, including Armani, Gucci and Prada. Stop at Cavern Walks for stylish boutiques, including Cricket and Vivienne Westwood, before heading over to the waterfront to the Albert Dock, and its bars and boutique shops.

Escape the city with a visit to Knowsley Safari Park and while youre in Knowsley, drop in to the National Wildflower Centre. Both Croxteth Hall and Country Park and Speke Hall boast stunning architecture and lovingly tended gardens, while the windswept beauty of Wirral Country Park is the ultimate escape.

The birthplace of not only the Beatles, but Echo and the Bunny men, Atomic Kitten, Cream and the Coral, the Farm and Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Visit the Beatles Story.

Accommodation is easily accommodating as long as money is no option.
European Capital Of Culture
The nation is fixed on a rotational basis, but there is great competition between the cities and regions of the nominated country for the honor of being nominated as ECC. The decision is made three years ahead, to allow time for preparation.

The reason every city wants to be nominated is because there it will receive millions of euro of national and EU investment. The nominated ECC region will also receive millions of euro from the 500,000 extra visitors during its yearas European Capital of Culture.

Cities are invited to put forward their proposals and reasons why they should be chosen. The national government makes the decision as to which city deserves the title most, though the decision is partly based on which city can benefit most from the financial investment.

In 2005 Cork in Ireland was the European City of Culture. Roads were improved, a sewage system installed and hundreds of thousands of extra visitors flocked to Cork to spend their money. They were treated to musical, theatrical and folk extravaganzas throughout the year.

In 2006 Patras in Greece has been chosen as the European City of Culture. Patras is about 90 miles west of Athens. Flights, car hire and accommodation are readily available, just search online, or ask your travel agent.

In 2007 Sibiu-Hermannstadt in Romania has been chosen for the European Capital of Culture. Hermannstadt is the German name for Sibiu. The city is the largest centre of German culture in Romania. Located in the Transylvanian forests of legend Sibiu is fast becoming the centre of Romania's developing tourism industry.

The European Capital of Culture in 2008 is Liverpool in England. Liverpool is a historic city whose wealth is based on its port. The port of Liverpool still exists, but is less important now. Liverpool is famous as the home of the Beatles, but has some stunning architecture. The Roman Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral is unusual outside, but absolutely mind blowing inside. You will find it half a mile uphill, behind Lime Street Station, the main railway station.

Liverpool has an excellent public transport system and friendly taxi drivers. Liverpudlians are famous for their wit and quick repartee. The airport is small, but the city is easily reached from its rival Manchester airport, too
