Evidence Based Complementary Alternative Medicine

    View:
Eastern medical practices have started to become more accepted and used in the West. The once far fetched idea of using meditation, herbs and other alternative health approaches no longer is laughed at.

When it comes to sweeping terms, alternative medicine is certainly one. It can include everything from massage, herb treatments, meditation and even prayer. This grab bag approach has led to an argument over what exactly alternative medicine means.

One group of medical scientists takes the view that anything not originating in the west is an alternative medicine. They view the grab bag as a hodge podge of questionable approaches and discount them.

On the other side of the ledger are medical professionals who mock the alternative title. They suggest a medical approach must be evidence driven. It either works or it does not. If it works, than it is part of mainstream medicine regardless of where it came from.

So, who wins the debate? At the moment, there is no answer. What is clear, however, is many eastern medical practices are becoming more popular with Westerners. Consider the following.

Regardless of how you define alternative medicine, there is little doubt it is growing in popularity. Over fifty percent of all adults in American have used it. Not just accepted it, but actually used it.

Interestingly, the increased use of alternative approaches does not preclude most western treatment plans. Instead, patients usually supplement such treatment plans with alternative approaches.

While alternative approaches are more accepted, the acceptance is limited to certain areas. The most popular alternative medications and treatments are in areas where re-occurring pain is a problem.

The doctor-patient relationship is one of trust and credibility in western medicine. Oddly, this seems discounted when it comes to alternative medicine. Simply put, most people do not consult with an alternative medicine specialist before trying it out.

When it comes to gender, women are more likely to go alternative than men. There is no clear evidence as why, but there is some suggestion that the mind-body treatment approach common in alternative is more attractive to women.

How we define medicine and where medicinal approaches come from seems to be somewhat irrelevant to most people. The question is whether the gain benefits from it. Given the rise in use, it would seem alternative medicinal approaches are here to stay.
Evidence Based Complementary Alternative Medicine
Alternative medicine has been around for thousands of years. Regions around India and China display been using alternative medicine techniques such as visualization and fortitude transfer for thousands of years. The practice of acupuncture has long been one of the leading forms of alternative medicine, but has come into mainstream use within the medical community in the last 20 years. While most forms of alternative medicine are not endorsed by multitudinous medical associations, some sites like divine Britain and the United States again and again have alternative medicine specialists residing in practice with more traditional and mainstream disciplines.

Naturopathy has at its line the belief that every one of human ailments may be solved by the combination of a healthy diet and using wholly natural ingredients and remedies. Using herbs, spices, and other medicinal plants, practitioners believe that they can solve all bodily illness. The use of modernized medical techniques including invasive surgery and the use of medical scans are frowned upon as unnecessary in the naturopathic community. Ayurveda was originally conceived in India, and remains in widespread use years later. Ayurvedic remedies include those that the practitioner creates using natural, healthy ingredients, and that proper digestion is the main to health.

Traditional Chinese Medicine was developed over 4,000 years ago, and has at its core the belief that by using medicinal herbs and other non-invasive procedures, largest ailments may be cured completely. Practitioners of TCM believe that acupuncture may heal everything from a headache to more serious ailments, and acupuncture has been used in the treatment of digestive problems and even cancer. Certainly, Traditional Chinese Medicine beliefs also focus around the use of tinctures and teas, and believe that by allowing the body to be brought back into harmony, better ailments could be easily overcome.

Yoga is one of the ancient of the alternative medicine disciplines. In the last 25 years, Yoga has become one of the greater prevalent of the alternative medicine practices in the Western world. One of the paramount foundations of the Hindu faith, Yoga focuses on flexibility and serenity as ways to promote commendable health in the body. Similar in practice to Yoga, Chiropractic Medicine is created around the belief that largest of the body's ailments could be attributed to a misalignment of the spinal cord and joints. Chiropractors focus on the adjustment and realignment of joints and soft tissue. Homeopathic medicine works differently. It is based around the belief that illnesses could be healed by using heavily diluted solutions. The solutions are based from those chemicals and substances that cause the same symptoms in a healthy being as those being suffered by the sufferer. Hypnosis is among the larger widely accepted alternative medicine disciplines, and is used by psychiatrists and psychologists in the treatment of many conditions. It focuses on putting the patient into a heavily suggestible state, allowing them to be directed through their own healing process.

While alternative medicine disciplines show been around far longer than legions of the mainstream options, numerous physicians and scientists openly question their efficacy. Because there is little, if any, concrete scientific proof that alternative medicine works, they spot it difficult to accept. Myriads physicians won't offer a referral to an alternative medicine practitioner, even at the patient's expense. As time wears on, yet, more physicians are partnering with alternative medicine specialists to enhance their own practice and appeal in more commerce from the more receptive alternative medicine community.

It's unknown whether alternative medicine practices will ever be accepted by the medical community as a whole. Multitudinous physicians won't offer referrals to alternative medicine practitioners, even as a supplement to their own treatments. As a result, legions populace in the Western world don't access alternative medicine treatments as readily as those in other parts of the world. Insurance providers time and again won't cover alternative medicine, even though the NHS has a number of hospitals with a homeopathic focus.
