Federal Grants For College Students

    View:
Federal student grants not only help financially needy students attend college, they also have an effect on the budget decisions of colleges and universities. To be considered for federal, state, or institutional aid, you must meet the following criteria (links are to detailed information on this page): be officially admitted to a degree, certificate, or health careers program be a US citizen or eligible noncitizen have a valid Social Security number not be in default on any federal student loans not owe money on any federal student grants be registered with the Selective Service, if required maintain satisfactory academic progress not be receiving financial aid from another school for the same term be in good academic standing with Harvard Extension School and Harvard Summer School not have an outstanding student account balance with the Extension School and Harvard Summer School be enrolled for the minimum number of credits specified by each applicable loan or grant programCitizenship Status. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)The application for federal student grants, work-study aid, and loans is called a Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA. To be eligible for federal student aid, applicants must not be in default ofrepayment of federal student loans or owe refunds on federal student grants.

Student

Students must remain in good academic standing for renewal of all forms of aid and must continue to demonstrate financial need for renewal of aid based on need. Students interested in their state grant programs may find their state's higher education agency on the federal government's list. Students in most cases are required to have completed the FAFSA for consideration. Submitting your form is only the first step in applying for federal student aid. State student aid deadlines State deadlines may be earlier than the federal deadline. Federal Student Aid The Federal government offers student aid for a variety of different types of schools, including vocational schools, community colleges, and colleges and universities. A student may borrow up to $8,500 annually through the basic Federal Stafford Loan program.

Federal

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOG) are for undergraduate students with exceptional financial need. Federal Work-Study is administered directly through your college so be sure to check out the college's deadlines for applying. Federal Stafford Loans are available as subsidized or unsubsidized loans. FEDERAL STAFFORD LOANS are available to students in two loan programs:DIRECT LOAN PROGRAM:? participating colleges and universities allow students to borrow directly from the federal government. Federal law prohibits a person from receiving fellowship and/or scholarships though multiple federally funded programs. For financial aid purposes, satisfactory academic progress in your degree, certificate, or health careers program is based on federal guidelines.

Grants

Grants do not need to be repaid (unless you fail to continue to meet their criteria). Grants come from federal and state governments, colleges and even private companies or organizations. Grants, scholarships and work-study programs may also help ease the financial burden. Sometimes, you or your parents may need to borrow some money to supplement any grants, scholarships, or work-study opportunities available to you. Unlike a loan, Federal Pell Grants don`t have to be repaid. Pell Grants are paid out at least once per term and can be as much as $4310 annually (effective July, 2007), depending on a student's EFC, cost of tuition, and whether the student attends school half-time or full-time. In contrast with Pell Grants, FSEOG's are not guaranteed for all eligible students. Like Pell Grants, FSEOG money is paid at least at least once per term and can either be deposited directly into one's bank account or paid directly to the student by the school's financial aid office, normally by check. NSLDS Student Access provides a centralized, integrated view of Title IV loans and Pell Grants so that recipients of Title IV aid can access and inquire about their federal loans or Pell Grants. Financial aid for online training and degree programs is available through Federal grants.

Programs

There are two kinds of federal student grant programs: Pell Grants, occasionally called Basic Educational Opportunity Grants, which are need based, and Federal Supplemental Opportunity Grants (FSEOG), which are based on extraordinary need. Government research programs such as the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health and the Environmental Protection Agency keep running lists of current grant opportunities. Never pay a service to locate scholarships or grant programs; this information is widely available for free. Most student financial aid comes from federal government programs. There are different Cal Grant programs for different college tuition needs based on the student's degrees and educational goals. Each year, colleges, universities and technical centers assist all students (including full-time, part-time, and day and evening students) in finding available funds from federal, state and campus sources to make educational programs affordable. Look into each college's own student aid programs.

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) The FAFSA application should be completed and submitted to apply for federal student grants, federal work-study and federal student loans.
