In either case, if you do not have a good track record in terms of credit history, then you are best off applying for a government student loan, as the chances of its approval will be higher than that of a private student loan. In addition a private student loan needs to be applied for on an yearly basis, the same applies for a government loan too, however with a private student loan, if your credit history was bad during the year, then the chances of getting a private student loan are reduced.

However there is one major drawback, unlike government student loans, the student needs to have a good credit history, and in most cases a co-signer is also required; hence not all students are eligible for private student loans.
