A lot of cooks see kale in the grocery store and leave it in favor of another vegetable because they do not know exactly what it is or how to best prepare and cook it. If you find out a little more about this leafy green, you will discover that it is both delicious and very versatile. You might like to try a kale soup recipe, a kale salad recipes or a kale stew first of all. Kale can be eaten raw or cooked.
Before the 1600s, kale was the most common green vegetable but it has been around since long before then. There is evidence of kale cultivation going right back to the fourth century BC in Greece. Kale was a popular addition to the British Victory Gardens of World War II and people are rediscovering the goodness and flavor of kale these days. There are a lot of new kale recipes and kale is cooked in recipes all over the globe.
If you have been out for dinner several nights in a row or not cooked for another reason, you have probably opened your refrigerator door at some point and winced at a soggy, brown pile of what were once vegetables. Kale freezes very well and actually tastes sweeter after being exposed to a frost. If you have fresh kale and especially fresh kale shoots which are very tender, try adding them to a salad. If you are making a kale salad, you might also want to add strong peppers, roasted nuts and peanuts, all of which bring out the strong, smoky flavor.
Kale is a green that is eaten around the world, and there are plenty of recipes to choose from. If you like cooked vegetables over raw ones, take a look at the kale recipes from the southern half of Africa, where kale is typically boiled with coconut milk and ground up or powdered peanut before being served on top of rice or a variety of flat breads. This is a great way to enjoy some extremely tasty vegetarian food, if you are looking to cut back on the meat in your diet.
Kale is often combined with ground or sliced meat, such as ground beef or spicy sausage, in Europe. It is usually combined with broth, olive oil, and potatoes to complement the meat. This means the meat will not obscure the taste of the greens because kale is quite a strong and tasty vegetable and can easily stand up to the meat flavor. It is nice chopped up and used as a stir-fry ingredient. This type of dish is made in many different countries.
When you are looking to stir-fry kale, try adding Japanese shiitake mushrooms to the mix. Remove the kale's stems and slice the leaves into large chunks. Heat some oil in your frying pan or wok, and gently fry up the mushrooms, garlic, and anything else you think might be tasty. When these ingredients are relatively tender, add kale, and seasons like soy sauce, pepper, and sesame oil, and you will have a tasty dish in very short order.
Kale is an extremely underrated vegetable, but with a little bit of effort, you can see how easily it slips into your diet. Take advantage of this dark green vegetable and integrate it into your daily life!

Looks like the war is on between some well known businesses and the manufacturers of knock offs. Zippo Manufacturing Company plans to lay off about 15% of their work force and they blame part of the cause on the knock offs of their lighters. In Pittsburgh where Zippo Manufacturing is located, there will be a few more on unemployment soon. Zippo has filed a complaint with the United States International Trade Commission to stop the manufacturing and sale of knock offs. Many of the knock offs are coming from China so Zippo has named four Chinese companies.
Because of the knock offs, Zippo has lost 30% of their business, which in turn has caused part of the reasons for the layoffs. Zippo says if their business picks back up substantially, they can hire back some of those they laid off. The layoffs were something they regretted having to do, but they claim it was the only option they had.
A few weeks ago was fashion week in New York and the designers are very upset by all of their designs being manufactured by clothing companies around the world and sold at cheap rates to everyone wanting them. These knock offs are causing quite a stir within the designer world and they have decided to fight back. Designers like Zac Posen and Diane von Fursternburg have teamed up together along with the Council of Fashion Designers of America to get copyrights to their fashions.
For those who cannot afford the big expensive fashions, the knock offs have been a way for them to get garments, which look like the latest fashions but at a very cheap price. The designers are also working with Congressman Bob Goodlatte to get legislation started, which would give the designers protection rights on their designs just like other artists; musicians have on their works. If it works out, the designers will be able to register their designs with the U.S. Copyright Office. The designs would then be protected for three years. It would be illegal for anyone to manufacture anything similar to the designs. The CFDA is an organization of over 270 designers and they are very upset with the manufacturers of the knock offs.
This is just two of the many companies or products, which are getting irate about the knock offs, found in the streets, discount stores, or wherever they are being sold. There are watches, jewelry, purses, shoes, and many more products. Many of the products use the same names and just spell them differently so the buyer may not notice. This problem is not new by no means but the Popular Manufacturers have decided it is enough and now is the time to take action. Time will tell which ones will win.
