For those that don't know; Fuerteventura is the second largest of the Canary Islands, and is located close to the west coast of Africa.



1. It's Hot!

Most of the year (if not all), Fuerteventura has an average temperature of between 20-25 degrees Centigrade, but in the summer months of June to September, this can shoot up to 30-35. It can be a little uncomfortable on occasion, but it's generally a dry heat coming from the Sahara which has been cooled by the winds blowing down from Europe.

In the winter months, the days times are still warm and very pleasant, but a breeze will be ever present, and you may need a light jacket for the evenings as the temperature drops at around 1730.

2. Its Cheap

Fuerteventura is not the cheapest Island, but its great when compared to the UK or US. Property rentals and purchases are very cheap (particularly right now), as is car hire. Plus a beer or two, or a glass of wine and an evening meal, certainly won't break the bank. A good meal for four with drinks and starters shouldn't be more than 70 euros in total.

Getting around the island is also very cheap. Most cab journeys in various towns are no more that 4 euros from one end to the other, and all drivers are legit and government employed.

3. Its Calm

Fuerteventura has to be one of the most laid back destinations I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing, and was a big factor in moving there.

The licensing hours are what I would call "interesting" as flexible just doesn't quite do it. Bars open at 9am mostly, and close when you leave, or at anything around midnight to 3am.

The mountains and coasts are amazingly tranquil and plentiful, with some of the world's finest beaches only a short car or bus journey away. The sands of Corralejo and Jandia in particular, are almost white, and remind me of Christmas every time I go there. You'll definitely need shades!

4. Its Unspoilt

As a fairly new destination, Fuerteventura is quiet and ideal for couples and families. There aren't too many bars that cater for crowds of shouting football-types, nor are there many nightclubs. Plus litter is almost zero, and all the roads are in mint condition (ideal for car & cycle hire), and mostly under ten years old.

5. Its Home

I moved here 2+ years ago now, after four wonderful holidays on the island. It wasn't a hard decision or a long term plan, and the whole affair was completed within five weeks of suggestion.

I moved here for all of the above, and still so much more. I feel safe, I feel content, and most of all...I feel at home.
