Let's look first of all at what LCD and plasma really are. Most people are acquainted with LCD from the display on their calculators but have never come across plasma before. So what is plasma? It has nothing to do with the clear fluid in the blood, but is a fluid of a sort in that it is a gas (which is technically a fluid).
The plasma in a TV screen is formed from neon and xenon gases that, when electrically charged, turn into what are known as ions. As the energy passes through this ionic cloud of gas they start moving faster and faster, and the negative and positive particles that make up the ionic gas become attracted to each other. When they collide they release a photon of energy. A photon is akin to a 'particle' of energy that is part particle and part wave.
This plasma is contained between two plates of glass with a tiny space between them. The inside surface of the plate that you view is coated with hundreds of thousand of tiny cells, each of which are coated with phosphor, a substance that emits light when hit by a photon. These can be excited to produce either blue, green or red light, and which are excited by the photon is determined by the energy of that photon.
The TV signal is converted to electrical energy that excites the photons of the plasma gases to specific energies according to the color of the original subject, and so excite the particular set of phosphor needed to produce the color. As red, blue and yellow can produce just about every other color of the rainbow, so red, blue and green do the same with photon sensitive phosphors.
On the other hand, an LCD (liquid crystal display) screen is totally different, and much more difficult to explain. To put it in simple terms, a liquid crystal is one that is more liquid than solid, and whose structure can be oriented by electromagnetic fields to either block polarized light or allow it through. Polarized light is light that is arranged so that its vibrations occur only in one plane, so that it is easily filtered.
Basically an LCD works by cells either allowing light through or not. This is colored by the use of red, blue and green filters in the front of each pixel, so that if light is passed through a pixel it is colored. If it is not passed through, then it is not colored. Therefore, both systems work through the use of the same three colors of light, just as the old cathode ray color TV does. With CTR the screen also contains red, blue and green phosphors, just as with the plasma screen, which are excited by a beam of electrons aimed at each specific pixel.
The choice between plasma TVs and LCD flat screen TVs depends on your specific needs that are beyond the scope of this article, but suffice it to say that each has its own merits and drawbacks, and whichever you choose will likely be a compromise. The situation will remain thus for many years since High Definition TV is not dependent on any particular system, other than it it is certainly not the old CTR, or Cathode Ray Tube TV.

From its origins as a humble �electromechanical information system� and early Cathode Ray delivery systems to the broadcast medium we know it to be nowadays, television has travelled along way to get to the multi dimensional full colour Liquid Crystal Display sets /Flat Screen TV of today. The television has now become one of the �must haves� in almost every household, certainly within the developed world.
Much like the conventional approach to driving a car and our understanding of how the Internal Combustion Engine works (or not depending on your point of view) very few people understand entirely what happens behind the screen of a TV or do they? The term television can actually be quite confusing because it can quite easily be used to refer specifically to a television set, programming or television transmission.
Television has problems that are similar to most emerging and developing technologies in that one of the problems that most people have is a total misunderstanding of the majority of the jargon and terms in use.
Now would be a good idea to concentrate purely on the digital aspect of television, its latest developments formats and bandwidth issues in use and exactly what all this technical jargon and terminology actually mean.

So in basic terms, how does a Digital TV differ from a more conventional one? Let us look at this whilst analysing one of the newer LCD TV�s available.
The LCD TV that we shall use for our illustrative purposes here is the Fujitsu P42HTA51ES Plasma TV.
The following items of information have to be understood before you can make a proper valued judgement regarding your new Digital TV?
The first item we need to consider is the Screen Resolution of the TV In this case it refers to the number of distinct pixels in each dimension that can be displayed.
Whether the TV is Hi-Definition Ready would be the next thing to look at. Hi Definition TV essentially makes a TV picture in a quality format that is at least four times better than conventionally available at present.
The next item that we would need to look at is what types of connectors are used between the peripherals used alongside the main Digital TV?
In this case we mean SCART Plugs and sockets and their usage. SCART stands for �Syndicat francais des Constructeurs d�Appareils Radio et Television (SCART).
Lastly on the technical side we would need to look at what types and what numbers of High-Definition Multimedia Interfaces (HDMI) are being used. Here High Definition Multimedia Interfaces (HDMI) refers to the audio/video connector interface that transmits the uncompressed digital streams of information between two or more digital components such as a HD DVD Disc player, a Blu-ray Disc player, a Personal Computer or Video Console.
The P42HTA51ES is a 42in Plasma TV and currently these TV's can be found for 2000 pounds sterling or 4000 US dollars. The screen resolution is 1024 X 1024 and with regards to being HD Ready the answer is yes. The Fujitsu has 3 (3 RGB) scarts and the type and number of Multimedia interfaces the P42HTA51ES uses is HDMI and DVI (I each). The type of Tuner for this TV is Analogue and the Fujitsu is available from limited outlets only.
So given this information, what would be our view of the Fujitsu P42HTA51ES?
First up, we would look at the picture quality and our score here would be 4, next we would look at the sound quality and our view of this would be 4. Another useful aspect to review is the availability and number of relevant connections and our score here would be 10. As far as overall features are concerned we would give it 8 and the final individual verdicts would relate to the ease of use and overall value for money and our scores here would be, 8 and 4 respectively.
Finally our overall opinion would be that this TV might have impressed the guys in the Office if it was a budget or mid priced TV but for the price quoted we expected a whole lot more
