Choosing to use a natural health remedy or supplement is a wise choice for anyone interested in staying healthy without risking potential harmful side effects. Yet, there is a great deal of confusion when it comes to understanding how to find and to select a natural health product. By following a few simple tricks, however, it doesn't have to be as difficult as it might seem.
Get a Clear Understanding of what "Natural" Means
A natural health product is one that has not been created through chemical alteration or synthesizing things that are found in nature in order to create an entirely different product. It is wise to use a natural health remedy to treat illnesses or a natural health supplement to prevent them from occurring because there are no side effects to using these products. In addition, many of the ingredients found in these products have been successfully used for hundreds of years in other cultures. The same cannot be said for many traditional forms of medication and treatment.
Make sure the Natural Health Product Really is Natural
One of the first obstacles to overcome when purchasing a natural health supplement or a natural health remedy is to make sure it truly is natural. Since there are no regulations regarding whether or not a product can be labeled as "natural," some unscrupulous companies stretch the truth a bit with their labeling. Therefore, it is best to check the product ingredient list and make sure all ingredients are recognizable. If any ingredients seem unfamiliar, research them on the Internet, consult a natural health magazine, or talk to a natural health practitioner to make sure the ingredients truly are natural.
Consult Expert Resources
Before purchasing a natural health product, it is important to consult with a variety of different resources in order to determine which one best suits the user's needs. A natural health magazine is a good place to start. Here, one can read numerous articles about the research that has been conducted with various products. In addition, many provide personal accounts and reviews regarding experiences with the product. These reviews typically include pros and cons, making it possible to determine if the product fits within a person's lifestyle.
An online natural health magazine or forum is another excellent resource for getting the latest information and reviews on a particular natural health treatment or natural health supplement. Often, these online formats are even more up to date than the information provided in a paper natural health magazine because the Internet can be easily changed on a daily basis. In addition, forums are an excellent place to learn more about a particular natural health product because the participants can chat back and forth with one another and clarify why they felt the product was great or not so great.
Using a natural health product is a good choice. It is important, however, to make sure the product or products are well researched in order to ensure they truly are natural and that they fit the need of the consumer. It may be necessary to try a couple different products in order to find the right one - but the search will be well worth it!
For Natural Health Products
Natural health products are often promoted as safer, more effective, and less likely to have side effects than prescription drugs. It should be noted that internationally, natural health products are regulated on the basis of safety and quality and to varying degrees, efficacy. They are defined (in Canada) as: Vitamins and minerals, Herbal remedies, Homeopathic medicines, Traditional medicines, such as traditional Chinese medicines, Probiotics, and other products like amino acids and essential fatty acids. Natural health products are closely related to drugs, and have begun to be regulated in order to control health claims being made by products not classified as drugs, but are taken for reasons above and beyond simple caloric intake.
There are many more aspects of the body's health and well being that can be enhanced when nutritional natural health products are added to a balanced diet. Natural health products are your fresh organic food products, fruits, vegetables & meats, food (dietary) supplements, preparations for skin and hair care. Unlike pharmaceuticals that must undergo rigorous testing and analysis, natural health products are not governed by the same regulations.
Incidences of harm caused by natural health products are statistically pretty insignificant, less than one in 100,000 by some measures, and extremely rare even by the numbers of the Fraser Institute. That's because natural health products are, though physiologically active, not drugs. They are available for self-care and self-selection, and do not require a prescription to be sold. Natural health products are regarded as dietary supplements and are not required to pass strict registration processes as would be expected of prescription drugs. In 1997 the Canadian government conducted a public review of natural health products and developed a separate regulatory framework to supervise them. As a result Health Canada created a new category called Natural Health Products and a new regulating authority was established to govern the sale of NHP's in Canada called the Natural Health Products Directorate.
Natural Health Products can have potent effects on the body. Although herbal products are advertised as "natural," they aren't natural to the human body. They include supplements which, in many cases, are made from traditional or specialty crops, seafood and aquaculture. Natural health products in the US are generally regulated as dietary supplements and fall under the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA). Natural remedies are sold in grocery stores, pharmacies and health food stores and they do not require prescriptions from a doctor. Will changes to the Food and Drugs Act result in a ban on natural health products. Will this change mean a prescription will be required for natural health products, like Vitamin C. Sometimes the most natural solution is a healthy diet and taking the time to rest when you are sick.
