Memphis Housing and Community Development has started addressing the problems of rising Memphis repo homes. The city government agency has formed a makeshift task force that would deliberate issues and move to prompt housing market players to cooperate in mortgage default and foreclosure prevention actions.
The task force has been divided into several committees that each would focus on legality of problems and even employment counseling initiatives for homeowners. There is even a committee that would set up and draft definitions and job descriptions for every committee. The formation of the task force is deemed as a little and slow effort to curtail Memphis repo homes. Results are expected to eventually show up.
There have been a combined 58,000 Memphis repo homes since 2000. The city government is estimated to shoulder about $20,000 for each foreclosure through maintenance costs. Overall, the task force notes that total local government expenditure for foreclosed homes in the city has reached up to $1.2 billion.
How does the task force intend to enforce action that will directly curb Memphis repo homes? First, the group intends to solicit or enforce cooperation from lenders. First Tennessee Bank, the initial member bank of the task force, is set to persuade peers and other lenders to join the initiative. The task force will also file class action lawsuits against lenders and foreclosed sellers, which inappropriately and illegally commits blunders in foreclosure processes.
The group will also analyze available data, and determine the unknown, to better understand the current situation. Also in the target are loan firms that appear to have targeted several minority communities in Memphis through offering high-loan cost and abusive mortgage products.

In order for the Philippinesto continue taking a bigger share of the burgeoning global BPO market, the 9the-Services Global Sourcing Conference and Exhibition was held last February9-10 at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City, and the City Government ofLegazpi, Embarcadero and Legazpi City ICT Council took part in the event.
Organized by the Department ofTrade and Industry (DTI) through its export promotions arm, the Center forInternational Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), this annual conference ishailed as a high-profile assembly in the Asia Pacific where the brightest mindsand the key players in the ICT and BPO arena converge to share their experiences, insights and expertise on best practices, industryinnovations, emerging delivery locations, and market opportunities.
With the theme ?Right move for the right results,? the9th e-Services Conference once again gathered both global and localindustry leaders, decision makers and centers of excellence as they tackled theemerging issues, trends and new business models in the ICT/BPO industry. Theydiscussed the future of the Philippine BPO and what are the strategies thatmust be undertaken to cushion the impact of the global financial crisis to theindustry. They also highlighted thecompetitive position of the Philippines in the offshoring and outsourcing(O&O) market vis-?-vis India.
Despite the present globaleconomic downturn, industry leaders expressed their positive outlook for thePhilippines as they indicated that the country is still very much on track tobecoming the global center of excellence in outsourcing.
President Gloria MacapagalArroyo in her keynote address during the conference said that the ?BPO industrycontinues to boom as global cost cutting is sent to outsourcing?. She also added that BPO and e-services are theeconomy's key drivers, generating investments and jobs, alleviating poverty andimproving the lives of the people.
This year's conference also featuredseminars, plenary sessions, business matching activities, and exhibit of ITproducts and services.
For the second time, the CityGovernment of Legazpi, Embarcadero and Council headedby Rosemarie Q. Rey are among the exhibitors in this prestigious event. LegazpiCity, being included in the Next Wave Cities showcased its capabilitieswherein the city's potential as an ideal outsourcing location was presented by CityMayor Noel Rosal during the second day of the conference.
Among the highlights duringthe presentation of the Next Wave Cities was the interactive video conferencebetween the Philippine's ICT Councils and members of the New York GlobalSourcing Council.
Given the much cheaper cost oftalent and infrastructure in the countryside, the next wave cities or ICT hubsare regarded as strategic investment locations for ICT and BPO servicesespecially in this challenging time of global financial condition whereinmultinational companies are implementing cost-effective means to cope with thechanging economic climate.
With the emergence of regionalICT hubs, the growth in the country's BPO sector will be propelled further, enablingthe Philippines to continuously be seen as -- in the words of TradeUndersecretary Thomas Aquino -- ?a ?BPO goldmine? by businesses all over theworld.?
