Fosamax belongs to the group of medicines called bisphosphonates. It alters the cycle of bone formation and breakdown in the body and slows bone loss while increasing bones mass, which further prevent bone fractures. It is used to treat or prevent postmenopausal osteoporosis, steroid-induced osteoporosis and to treat pagets disease of bone. This medication is used in the treatment of weak bone by decreasing the activity of cells which break down bone.  Maintaining strong bones by slowing bone loss helps to reduce the risk of fractures. Fosamax is used to treat osteoporosis (thinning of bone) in women after menopause. After menopause, there is an increased rate of bone loss (resorption). Risk of developing osteoporosis is greater as you age, after menopause due to the lack of natural estrogen hormones, and if you are taking corticosteroid medications (e.g., prednisone) for long periods. In these patients, fosamax has been shown to increase bone density while strengthening bone, and decrease the rate of bone fractures. It is also helpful in the treatment of Paget's disease of the bone. Paget's disease is characterized by a disorderly and accelerated remodeling of the bone, leading to weak bone.

One should carefully follow instructions to maximize the amount of drug absorbed and reduce the risk of injury to his esophagus. This medication should be taken once a day, after getting up for the day and before taking first food, beverage or other medication. After swallowing the tablet, one should stay fully upright for at least 30 minutes and do not lie down until after your first food of the day. Wait at least 30 minutes after taking the medication before you eat or drink anything other than plain water. This medication is not recommended at bedtime or before rising for the day as it may not be absorbed and one may have side effects. Other medications, vitamins, antacids, coffee, tea, soda, mineral water and food can decrease the absorption of fosamax, so avoid these things for at least 30 minutes. Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it and remember to use it at the same time each morning.

Stomach pain, constipation, gas, nausea are some side effect that may occur. If these effects persist or worsen, one should consult doctor or pharmacist. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: jaw pain, an increase in muscle or bone pain, black stools, vomit that looks like coffee grounds. This medication may infrequently cause serious irritation and ulcers of the esophagus. If you notice any of the following unlikely but very serious side effects, stop taking fosamax and consult your doctor or pharmacist immediately. A serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seeks immediate medical attention if it occurs.
