Free Radical And Antioxidant

Antioxidants are a class of nutrients that protect the body from damage caused by different factors, most importantly oxidative damage caused by substances called free radicals. Free radicals are known as "reactive oxygen species", or ROS. They are produced when your body uses oxygen for energy. Just as fire emits smoke as a by-product, ROS are emitted from the conversion of oxygen to energy in the human body, eventually causing oxidative damage to body systems. Free radicals are also created when the body is exposed to pollution, cigarette smoke, car exhaust and other harmful environmental toxins.



There are different types of antioxidants, and most work better when paired with other antioxidants. This is called synergism. Vitamins can be antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E. The tripeptide glutathione, loosely classified as an amino acid, acts as an antioxidant, along with other true amino acids such as methionine. The raw herbs and vegetables we consume contain natural antioxidants called bioflavonoids and carotenoids, which are effective antioxidants on their own, but are more effective when synergistically combined with other antioxidants. Together these nutrients protect your cells from electron robbery at the hands of larcenous free radicals, protecting the body from disease and slowing the inevitable signs of aging.

Humans are made up of cells, these cells have specific functions. Over time these cells become damaged and when these cells are damaged the organs they make fail to function. This damage is mostly caused by free radicals. A free radical is an atom that has an odd number of electrons in its outer ring. 

When an atom has an odd number of electrons that means that one electron is unpaired making it unstable. Since the atom is unstable it steals electrons from another atom causing a chain reaction. Free radicals steal an electron and break down another molecule such as loose protein, sugars, or fatty acids. A free radical can steal an electron from protein that can contain a strand of collagen, which then causes a break in the collagen strand. Over years a strand of collagen stops functioning and loses its elastic quality. Concluding to skin beginning to sag and age this damage continues over years. 

Unprotected sun exposure, pollution, polyunsaturated fatty acids, normal chemical processes that the body does, acne, and products that produce free radicals when applied to the skin are all creators of free radicals. To slow the process of skin aging you just have to reduce the nonessential free radical activity that happens in the skin. Acne control, protecting your skin from the sun exposure, and using free radical producing products will reduce the free radical activity. 

Ultraviolet radiation in sunlight is one of the biggest reasons the skin ages prematurely. The skin wrinkles from the UV rays. Free radicals break down the collagen in the skin which causes it to sag and wrinkle. Skin collagen is what we need to keep are skin soft and looking young. 

Polyunsaturated fatty acids are another cause of free radical damage. Avoiding all margarines and vegetable oils rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids such as safflower, sunflower, corn, soy, and canola oil will reduce free radicals. Fried foods are rich in these oils. Low dietary intake will help reduce the free radicals.

Producing and using energy creates free radicals. Chemical process such as processing food uses energy concluding to free radicals. Any sort of muscle use such as breathing also creates free radicals. All of these free radicals damage the components the skin is made out of. This is because the skin atoms are stealing electrons to make the atom stable. Thousands of cells are exposed to free radicals daily. This results in the skin aging faster. 

A healthy body can handle free radicals. If the immune system is weak it can not handle the free radicals. Damage can then occur if your body is weak and can not handle the free radicals. Damage to organs, cancer, and diseases can result if the body's immune system is weak.
