Bathrooms have come a long way from the days when a bathroom simply meant, a "room with a bath." Today's bathrooms aren't only a "room with a bath," but often have showers, Jacuzzis, changing rooms, chairs, and bath vanities. Slowly, bathrooms are becoming even more of a focal point of a house, where people spend hours of their day.



A specific bathing area dates back as far as the Romans and Greeks, where the first surviving bathtub had eerily similar attributes to our modern bathtubs. Not only is it similar in the style and look of the tub itself, but also the plumbing that surrounded it. Palaces throughout Greece show evidence that they had private areas dedicated to bathing, and writers such as Homer, often wrote of the heroes bathing in warm water to heal and regain strength after battle. It is also believed that Achilles gained his invincibility from his mother bathing him.

It was also the Roman philosophy to have a private area to bath, allowing people to have a few minutes to themselves to rest and relax. Today, we are expanding on their philosophy more and more. As our days get busier and busier, and people have less time to themselves, the bathroom is quickly becoming a safe haven from the worries of the world.

The uniqueness of a bathroom is that it is its' own separate entity from the rest of the home. It is secluded from phones ringing, rambunctious kids yelling, and the drowned out background noise of the television. It's becoming one of the few places people can truly escape to. It is only reasonable to expect that the bathroom have the necessary amenities to provide that sanctuary.

Most bathrooms today have the necessary basins to wash themselves, and are stepping outside of the typical boundaries further than ever. People have whirlpool bathtubs, free standing tubs (meaning they are not built into the wall), and space for storage galore. Today, most bathrooms don't just have storage closets though, they have beautiful pieces of furniture that have the sink basin attached to it, called bath vanities.

Today, they're being found more and more as houses get older and older. They are a simple way to upgrade your bathroom into the peaceful oasis that people crave, as well as providing a great deal of storage space. With people's lives bustling more than ever, everyone can use all the help they can get to enjoy some alone time in a place where you can take a few deep breaths and enjoy some peace and quiet. Even Achilles needed a little help.
