There are a number of ways to hide your scent when game hunting and some are better than others. Plenty of hunt supply shops offer masking scents. These masking scents are used to recreate one of natures outdoor smells, such as the scent of small game, or even of the forest itself.
According to experts, what is the only thing a deer cannot smell? Got it yet? Well the answer is NOTHING. If you are using a masking scent, the deer can still smell you. It might not know who you are yet but it certainly knows you are there. The best method then of avoiding detection from your odor is to not have an odor. Use unscented shampoo and soap and don't use scented deoderants or aftershaves etc the days leading up to the game hunting trip.
Use unscented detergents to wash your hunt attire and if the weather allows, hang it outside the day or night before to let it air. Keep any food you carry sealed in air tight bags and make sure your equipment is clean of anu odors.
The opposite to using scents to blend into your surroundings is to use scents to lure your prey.
Lures are designed to tempt the animals natural curiosity by imitating say, a doe in heat perhaps. This hopefully will attract both the buck looking to mate and other doe looking for company, close enough for you to take your shot.
Many game hunting pro's will agree scents can be useful if used properly. Animal experts tell us a mature buck can smell 1 part human odor buried beneath 10 000 parts of any masking scent. We know deer rely on their sense of smell for survival so these facts should not really suprise us.
When using a lure for game hunting bare in mind you will have to be extremely vigilant and time your shot to perfection. The prey will only get so close before "smelling a rat" and bolting for cover.
Game Hunting In Africa
Before going big game hunting many of the worlds best hunters endorse honing your shooting skills on small game. Only once you are sure of your aim would they advise stepping up.
If you think about it, it makes very good sense. A hit on small game is going to almost always be a clean kill as opposed to a shot on big game resulting in a wound that leaves the animal either running at you or away into the woods to die a slow death from infection. Being able to hit that squirrel at distance means a clean head shot to big game is much more likely.
Obviously being a good shot is essential but there is much more to game hunting. Another important skill needed is to have a good understanding of your prey. Great hunters can track and follow their prey for miles, competent hunters know where their prey likes to graze, what its habits are and its prefered surroundings. These skills come by reading, studying and experience.
Its not all running through the woods though tracking and hunting. Much big game hunting is done from a stand, either on the ground or from within a tree. This type of game hunting requires great patience and determination as you can find yourself stood quietly in position for many, many hours waiting for your prey.
One other important skill is the selection of equipment. A weapon chosen that is not up to the task of making a clean kill will result in a wounded animal either charging you or dying a slow and painful death from infection. Bow hunters in particular should always make sure their weapon has enough draw weight.
Their are many different makes, variations and models of hunting rifle available today and the choice you make will be entirely based on the prey you hunt. Famous brands like the Winchester and Remington as well as relatively unknown brands like the Sakko 75 hunting rifle and the Tikka T3. Weatherby and Ruger are also rifles which are used by some hunters. Whichever hunting rifle you use, just make sure it is suitable for the game you hunt.
The thrill and excitement of hunting your prey in its own environment is what game hunting is all about. Wether it is tracking through the woods and mountains or waiting patiently in a tree, the heart races with the rush of adrenalin. Making sure you have the right equipment and necessary skills will help ensure the days hunting will be both safe and successful.
