Garmin has emerged as one of the leading GPS manufacturers in the industry today. Durable, versatile, and dependable, these must haves have earned their place in the land (or water) of the GPS leaders. GPS devices today are made for boats, cars, ships, airplanes, the palm of your hand, and even cell phones now have some GPS capabilities. With handheld units, you can find roads, places of interest, obstructions, restaurants, hospitals, and you can even find yourself! How many products promise you that?
GPS units these days are not just for keeping people from getting lost or finding people if they are lost. People have long been playing games with these GPS units. They are a sort of find the hidden treasure game, called geocaching. Participants in these games use GPS to hide and find containers full of treasures, and they hide them and find them all over the world. The caches, which are the hidden containers, are usually somewhat small, waterproof, and contain a journal or note on paper with some sort of trinket, usually of little value. Geocaching has become a worldwide loved pastime, with the number of registered caches that are hidden approaching the 1,000,000 mark. These canisters are hidden on all seven continents (yes, even on Antarctica), and can be found in more than 100 different countries.
So how can GPS devices help find these treasures? The clues to finding them lie in location coordinates. The journal paper or note that is inside the cache contains the coordinates of that containers location. These coordinates are entered into an official geocaching website by the hider. The seeker sees that a cache is hidden at specific coordinates online, takes note, grabs his handheld GPS device, puts in the coordinates, and follows the trail by way of his GPS that will lead him right to the treasure.
Many people travel across the world to find these hidden caches in such places as the pyramids in Egypt, the Amazon Rain Forest, or even an igloo in Antarctica. Garmin is one of the most popular makers of handheld units. Their units are portable, fit comfortably in your hand, and are often sold as kits and adventure packs, complete with accessories. Garmin also makes dog tracking systems and units specifically to find you, and are appropriately named Ifinders.
Geocaching is a fun, worldwide treasure hunting game that is based on GPS technology, and participants claim they easily get hooked on the pastime. Just make sure that before you are off and running to find your next little hidden container you have your Garmin handheld GPS unit with you the treasure is sure to be yours.
Garmin Handheld Gps Unit
In the past most people who bought a GPS unit would mount it inside of their car. Today, each consumer will make this decision on their own. Most units come with mounting kits, but you can decide if you would like to use it or not. Many people are finding that it is more convenient for them if they do not mount the GPS, though others feel that mounted is the best option. You will need to decide, based on your own needs which option is best for you and the way you use your GPS unit.
Benefits of Mounting
There are many benefits to mounting your GPS unit in your car. The most obvious benefit is that you will always know where your GPS is. You won't have to fumble around for it when you are driving and you can ensure that it is in a place where you can easily see the screen or hear the directions. This is especially important if you regularly drive in unfamiliar areas where you cannot risk taking your eyes off the road for even a moment.
Many units were made to be mounted in a car or in a boat or aircraft, so they simply work better when they are mounted to something. If you have to push buttons or touch the screen you may need the GPS to be on a flat and steady surface to have it work quickly, easily, and as effectively as possible.
Benefits of Not Mounting
Many people like to keep their GPS on their seat, on the dash, or on the divider between the driver's and passenger's seat in their vehicle. For these people not mounting makes the most sense because they can place the GPS where they want it. For many people it is a matter of comfort and some people are more comfortable having the GPS in a specific place where it cannot be mounted but can be viewed.
Other people do not mount their GPS because it can be a hassle to get it done. In fact, many people start out planning to mount the GPS but when they find out how difficult it is they decide otherwise. Many people cannot install the GPS themselves, instead it needs to be professionally installed which can take time and money. In addition, if you want to remove the GPS unit from the car at any time it may leave holes or discoloring on the dash area of the car.
A lot of people choose not to mount if they don't use their GPS in the same car each time they use it. If you only use your GPS in a work vehicle or when you are in a rental car it really doesn't make sense to mount it in your personal car. In addition, if you only use your GPS a couple times a year it may not be worth it to mount the unit permanently in the car.
