Georgia is a state full of tourist attractions from the top to the bottom of the state. From the mountains of Rome to the University of Georgia in Athens, to the metropolis of Atlanta, on to the shores of Savannah, there are several cities across the state of Georgia that offer much in the way of tourism.



Rome is a gorgeous town with a population of about 36,000 in northwest Georgia. It has the fantastic luck of being home to seven hills and is at the convergence of three rivers, so the environment is very lovely. The trees are magnificent in the fall and encourage many drives and walks through the hills. It is also home to beautiful Berry College.

Athens is home to the University of Georgia, and therefore is a much traveled to site for football fans in the south and across the country. Athens is located in the northeaster side of the state, in Clarke County. It is a very exciting city, with a mixture of eclectic student culture, music, food, and shopping.

Atlanta has the largest population of any city in Georgia and is the ninth largest populated metropolitan area in the United States with more than 5 million people there. There is a great deal of night life in Atlanta and several young professionals and Georgia Tech students there to take advantage of it. There are several suburbs of Atlanta, like Buckhead where people can find the finest dining and shopping. The large theme park and water parks of Six Flags over Georgia is located on the western border of Atlanta and brings many visitors from all over the south to the area.

Callaway Gardens is located about an hour and a half from Atlanta, with its famous butterfly sanctuary and botanical gardens. Warm Springs outside of Callaway Gardens is home to the President Franklin Roosevelt's Little White House. Tours of the property are available to the public. My family visited here from last fall and had a wonderful time.

In the center of the state is Macon, Georgia, where the Georgia Music Hall of Fame is located. It is also home to the historic Rosehill Cemetery, and the Hay House. Flannery O'Connor's farm Andalusia is in Milledgeville. Every golfer knows that Augusta is home to the fabulous golf course that annually hosts the Masters golf tournament.

Savannah, on the eastern shore of southern Georgia on the Atlantic Ocean, is a magnificently beautiful and historic city. It is said that Grant thought Savannah was so beautiful that he spared it the fate of most of the southern cities he burned to the ground in the Civil War and therefore many of the buildings from the 18th century remain. It is a city built on squares, and is still laid out as it originally was. There are several famous locations, including Mercer House and Telfair Mansion and Art Museum, as well as several famous restaurants, including Paula Deen's The Lady and Sons.
