Student/college credit cards are credit cards specifically designed for young men and women attending college. Although student credit cards are also referred to as college credit cards, we will use the identifier, student credit card in this information release. Student credit card is the more popular term to describe credit cards for young men and women attending college. Student cards allow their users to understand the benefits of "real world" credit card usage before graduating college and taking on a full time occupation. Typically, for most college students, their student credit card is their first credit card and the door-opener to the world of credit card usage. Some students may have previously used supplementary credit cards, but those credit cards are linked to their father's or mother's credit card account. Still, it is true for those college students also, that their student credit card is the first credit card they can truly call their own.

Student credit cards are essentially the same as other credit cards. They are used in the same way as most other credit cards are. Some differences come into play for student credit card users, simply because they have no prior experience using credit cards and more than likely don't understand credit cards, conceptually. Hence, credit card issuers are at risk when approving student credit cards for young individuals who have little or no credit or credit card usage history. The inexperience of the student credit card user, in managing their finances maturely, puts the student credit card issuer at risk of getting the monthly credit card bill payments on time and/or receiving the payments at all. To insure themselves from student credit card dissemination risks, the issuer of student credit cards usually requires a parent of the student to co-sign the student credit card application. Also, the credit limit allocated to student credit cards is lower than it is for credit cards given to working adults. Still, the assigned credit limit is, most often, sufficient to fulfill the college student's needs. Another way credit card issuers use to dissuade college students from spending too much is to assign a higher interest rate to the student card.

If we are to peruse those seeming, previously mentioned, impositions in a positive manner, we will find that the same impositions are actually advantageous to the student, who is still training to manage real world credit card usage. Most often those impositions will assist the student credit card user in establishing good credit history. Good credit history will be important to the student at a later date in his or her life, when they want to procure more credit cards or loans.

Student credit cards are a very important way to firmly establish good credit. They are financial tools which most college student should consider acquiring.

If your credit score is particularly low because of little or no credit you may be limited in your choices for a credit card, but it is still possible to obtain one. Your credit score isn't the only thing that a provider will look into when you apply for a credit card.

Lenders take several things into consideration when deciding whether or not to approve a credit card application. Your overall credit history includes any late payments, how much, if any, credit you already have available and how much debt you currently owe. A potential lender will also look at your employment situation. An applicant with a steady job and income will look more favorably than someone with a spotty employment history.

If things are still not looking in your favor, there are a few things you can do to help your credit. Pay off your current creditors as soon as you can, and avoid late payments as much as possible. Don't apply for several credit cards at once. Every time you apply, your credit score is affected negatively.

There are specific cards for people with little or poor credit. Don't apply for just any card. Do some research and find out what credit card is most likely to accept your credit. Credit cards that are designed for people with less than perfect credit histories almost always have a higher interest rate than a typical credit card. Chances are you won't have a very high credit line available to you either. However, just having the card can be very beneficial for you in the long run. It's always important to have a credit card for emergencies. And there are many situations where a credit card is necessary such as renting a car or a hotel room. If you have obtained a higher-interest card because of poor credit history, you should probably not carry a balance on it. The best way to take advantage of it is to put a few purchases here and there on it to build up some good credit.

A good option if you have poor credit history is to get a secured credit card. With this type of credit card, you make a cash deposit on the card which it deducts from when you use the card. It works very much like a debit card, but a secured credit card will earn interest, and can help improve your credit score as you continue to make deposits to cover your purchases.

As you can see, even without perfect credit there are still options to obtain a credit card. Do some research and compare different credit cards online before your apply. Choose your card carefully and manage it wisely and you will be on your way to better credit and more options with future credit cards.
