Do you like heavy metal musicians from the 70's and 80's? Check out Gene Simmons from KISS on VH1, Tommy Lee (the drummer from Motley Crue) going to college on NBC, or the lead singer from Warrant on Celebrity Fit Club. Like hip-hop? Bobby Brown has his own show on Bravo. Boy bands more your thing? Joey McIntyre danced up a storm on Dancing with the Stars.
How about aging sports stars? Jose Canseco is one of the housemates on The Surreal Life 5, and we all got to see Evander Holyfield strut his stuff on ABC this summer. Hulk Hogan has his own show on VH1.
We also have the opportunity to see television stars from previous decades – remember Balki on Perfect Strangers? He's also one of the roommates on The Surreal Life 5. Willie Aames from Charles in Charge and Eight is Enough is on Celebrity Fit Club. Who didn't love John O'Hurley (of Seinfeld fame) on Dancing with the Stars?
Comediennes also have a place on reality television. Victoria Jackson was great on Saturday Night Live – now she's trying to lose weight on Celebrity Fit Club. Kathy Griffin has her own show on Bravo titled, interestingly enough, My Life on the D List.
Reality television is even going so far to have the children of rich and famous people star in their shows. E! has a show called Filthy Rich Cattle Drive, where the children of the rich and famous have to rough it on a ranch.
I don't know about you, but my favorite reality shows are ones where the stars are real people. I think it's great to see someone considered a regular person (or average) succeed with a record contract or with a large cash prize. It's sometimes hard to route for the rich and famous – I'd rather see the poor and unknown person succeed on reality tv.
Get On Reality Tv
After all, we generally already know all the people in our house and we aren't just getting to know several others who have been thrown into the mix under the watchful eye of the television camera crew.
Chances are that the camera might catch us doing some very dull things. We'd be doing our laundry and the suspense of whether or not we will sort it into colours and whites wouldn't be enough to score any kind of impressive TV ratings amongst viewers. We'd be feeding the cat and we may get caught calling them baby names but we can all relate to that. The camera might also catch us playing internet bingo a lot.
An hour of gaming might look very dull indeed through the eyes of the camera even though we take our internet bingo very seriously ourselves. The truth is that the footage might look more like a still photo than action. There we sit in the same position for an hour, the only movement seeming to be a wee bit of keyboard tapping and mouse clicking. The action on our computer screens may certainly be far more fun and eventful than it would appear on the television screen.
Revealing our Secrets
When imagining ourselves as the subject (victim?) of a reality show camera we think of the embarrassments as much as anything else. There we are wearing that same pair of track pants for the third day in a row despite the fact that on day one we spilled pasta sauce on it. Of course, if we KNEW people were watching, we might be inclined to change our clothes which in reality would negate the entire idea of a reality show, wouldn't it?
While wearing the food encrusted pair of three day old track pants, chances are that the camera footage might embarrass us further by showing exactly how much time we do spend practically motionless in front of our computer screen playing internet bingo.
Yes, when there are no cameras on us we can innocently tell our family that we spent an hour online. That blasted reality camera would inconsiderately reveal that our internet bingo session was far closer to three hours and that we barely moved a muscle the whole time.
Unreal Reality
Yes, it is a very good thing that reality television shows are not all that real. The people on them know there are cameras watching when they decide what to wear everyday and when they play internet bingo. Watching people like us who let the dirty dishes pile up in the sink while we play our umpteenth game of internet bingo would just be too close for comfort.
Watching us race around to do our housework at the end of the day so we can pretend we didn't play internet bingo all afternoon would be a good laugh but we would never consider sharing that kind of revealing footage to the nation let alone our nearest and dearest!
