Get Rid Of A Double Chin

    View:
How to get rid of a Double Chin

Double chins tend to come with growing older but they are not inevitable and they are capable of being reduced without surgery. There are several reasons behind them - genetic tendency; lack of exercise and fat and fluid build-up.

Steps to get rid of a double chin.

1) Look at your face in the mirror. Do you really have a double chin or is it just that you have unrealistic expectations about your looks? Don't put undue pressure on yourself to look 18 when you're 38, 48, 58. Some give is simply nature's wear and tear!

2) Check your posture. How do you stand? If you are slumping, you will be creating unnecessary lumps and bumps on your body, including around your chin area because the fat seeks unfirmed areas to settle in. Stand up tall, put your head up, shoulders back and uncurve that spine. See a professional physiotherapist who can recommend simple but effective exercises to improve your posture. Keep active.

3) See your doctor. If there is a fluid problem around your chin area, it may need further consideration. If there is simply fluid retention, ask your doctor to refer you to a massotherapist who can expertly massage the area to try and unblock the fluid and assist with better posture and relaxation.

4) Exercise. This will keep your whole body well-toned and trim, as well as keeping your circulatory and lymphatic systems running properly. It can be as simple as daily walks or as complicated as gym sessions. As long as you are being active and stretching your muscles, you will tone your body and help prevent the build up of fat deposits, including in your chin area.

5) Lose weight if you need to. A double chin due to additional weight is a good indicator to change your lifestyle diet. Don't try anything restrictive or faddish though. Your change must be one that you can carry on for the rest of your life. Small, consistent losses are what you should be aiming for and maintaining. Your diet should include plenty of fibre, fruits, vegetables and water. See a nutritionist, dietician or doctor for advice and encouragement.

6) Do chin and neck specific exercises. Many people have very tight necks because of stress, bad posture and computing work. Tilt your head from side to side as far as your head will go. Tilt it forward and back as far as it will go. If you experience pain doing this exercise, you will need to build it up gently over weeks, maybe even months, but persevere asyou are retraining your neck muscles to be more supportive and flexible.

7) Use makeup to cover up. It is possible to use makeup to lessen a double chin. Try to make your jawline feature more prominently than your neck by using a powder that is a shade darker than your skin tone. The powder should be blended in from ear to ear and into the neck area. Draw attention away from the neck area with colourful blush and interesting eye makeup. If you can't get it right yourself, see a makeup artist to show you how to do this.

8) Improve your hairstyle. Don't have a haircut that rests at the level of your chin, or long hair, because both styles will draw more attention to your chin. Make the hair sit higher; short hair is the order of the day. If you're willing to take a risk, tall spiky hair may lessen the appearance of a double chin.

9)Don't wear chokers/tight dog collars. They are tight on the neck, emphasizing the double chin and possibly leaving red marks. If you still want this look, there are necklaces that have a similar design to dog collars, but hang like regular necklaces.

10) Wear a broad, open neckline. This will draw attention away from your neck region. Depending on your style, you may be able to get away with wearing a very high collar which may totally cover your neck (think Dracula here). However, this may only work if you're wearing a coat/costume with this type of collar, so don't depend on it.

11) Appreciate yourself for who you are. Your appearance is more than your genetic features. How you dress, how you present yourself, how you communicate with others, how you share your sense of you with others and how much confidence you have in yourself as a worthy human being are all worth 1000 times more than the appearance of a double chin. Think really deeply about those people in your life who really matter - they're not constantly telling you how you look; rather, it's our inner devil who does this.

These steps should help you get rid of a double chin.

Tips on how to avoid to get rid of a double chin.

- Don't spend too many hours slumped over a computer everyday. If you must work with a computer all day, do stretches every half an hour. If you forget to do this, set an alarm on your computer to remind you. There are web programs that you can download which give you simple exercises that you can do in a few minutes at your desk without anyone even noticing.

- If you have a genetic tendency towards a double chin (i.e. look at your parents, other family members), then you have even more reason to exercise and eat healthily to avoid getting a double chin or to reduce one you may already have.

- Count the hidden calories/kilojoules in your diet - beer, soft drinks, snack bars and takeout meals all carry a load of hidden sugars (which are converted to fat when not needed), fats and empty calories/kilojoules. These are all contributing to the double chin, so cut down on them or cut them out altogether for a time.

- We live in an age of the "youth culture" and sadly we've forgotten how to age gracefully through acceptance of the reality of human anatomy. There is freedom and wisdom in growing older; gains that looking young will never outdo.

Warnings

! Don't wear dangly earrings or short necklaces - they will accentuate the chin

! Don't wear turtleneck sweaters or high collars

! Don't tan too much, or at the very least, cover up your neck and face region; the sun helps to break down the skin's elasticity earlier than the normal course of aging

Get Rid Of A Double Chin
Here's what I've found:

1) Lose 10 or 15 pounds. "The single best way to get rid of a double chin is to Lose Weight," says Robert Kotler, M.D., a facial cosmetic surgeon and clinical instructor in surgery at the University of California, Los Angeles. "Lots of people come to my office wanting cosmetic surgery. But if they just take off some excess weight, the problem usually diminishes to the point where they don't need any more help."

2) Get cropped. Long hair draws eyes to your neck, which, if you have a double-chin is exactly what you want to avoid. Pageboy cuts which curl under the chin are the absolute worst. "The rule is to keep it short, at or above the jawline," says Kathleen Walas, fashion and beauty director for New York Citybased Avon Products and author of Real Beauty . . . Real Women.

3) Shoulders Back! Yes, a good posture is yet another way to help you get rid of a double chin. Sitting up straight and keeping your jaw slightly jutted is going to help keep that double chin away. When you give your jaw muscles too much slack it ensures that loose skin and body fat begin to accumulate there. Try an ergonomic chair to help you stay on the 'up and up' posture-wise at work.

4) Moisturize. Although moisturizing won't prevent a double-chin, many women forget the neck and decolatage areas when cleansing and moisturizing. Be sure to give as much TLC to your neck area as you to do your face.

5) Makeup. To play down a double chin, play up another feature. Walas suggests using blush high on your cheekbones. Or, pay extra attention to your eyes using bright, tasteful shades of eye shadow. Apply foundation, if you use it, a shade darker under your chin and blend it well with your facial foundation. "That will make the rest of your face bright and attractive and your double chin much less noticeable," Walas says.

Exercising...

Facial exercises can help that double-chin challenge and should be done once a day. This is a regimen which can be continued for life, or you can scale back to three times a week after a month of doing these exercises daily.

Some folks report that minor spots or blemishes appear after starting facial exercises, and yes, this is normal. You are stimulating the skin, increasing circulation, which in turn increases production of the skin's natural lubricants and oils. This results in increased releases of impurities. This temporary side-effect will disappear very quickly once the skin is functioning efficiently again.

Skin cells, like some of us couch potatoes, tend to get lazy and stagnate. But, with proper exercises both we and our skin cells are once again activated to work with renewed vigor.

Neck and throat facial exercises

* A great exercise is to sit upright, tilt your head back looking at the ceiling while keeping your lips closed and begin a chewing movement. You will feel the muscles working in your neck and throat area - and will be truly amazed at the results. Repeat 20 times.

* Sit upright, tilt your head back looking at the ceiling, while keeping your lips closed and relaxed. Start puckering your lips together in a kiss and stretch the kiss, as if you were trying to kiss the ceiling. Keep your lips puckered for 10 counts, then relax, bring your head back to its normal position and repeat 5 times.

* Sit upright, tilt your head back looking at the ceiling, while keeping your lips closed and relaxed. Open your lips and stick your tongue out as if you were trying to touch your chin with the tip of your tongue. Keep your tongue out in this position for 10 counts, and then return your tongue and head to its normal position.

* Sit upright, tilt your head back looking at the ceiling, while keeping your lips closed and relaxed. Next move your lower lip over your top lip as far as possible and keep it there for a count of 5. Relax and repeat 5 times.

* Lie on your bed, with your head hanging down over the edge. Slowly bring your head up towards your torso and keep it there for 10 counts. Relax and lower your head towards the floor again - repeat 5 times.

* Sit upright and face forward and while keeping your lips together, separate your teeth by dropping your jaw and then push your jaw forward, keep for a count of 10, bring back to starting position and repeat 5 times.

* Chewing sugar-free gum is a great way to help maintain good hygiene and fight off a double chin. Keeping your jaw and facial muscles moving and working is the key to preventing the build up of excess fat and loose skin. The muscles in your face responsible for keeping your jaw line tight are the same muscles that you use to chew and make facial expressions-chewing gum and making facial expressions will help retain that jaw line.
