Heartburn is the result of what occurs when the correct order of things between the esophagus and the stomach fails to happen for whatever reason. The esophagus is a tube through which food passes from the mouth to the stomach. At the bottom of the esophagus there is a valve that is supposed to close after the food has left the esophagus and entered the stomach.
