Of course, the reality hit me pretty quickly, which is when I realized I had absolutely no idea how I could get people to notice me online. Luckily things are different now!
Here are some things you can do that will shorten the time it takes for your site to be indexed:
1. Fill out your META data fields properly - and use all of them, filled out uniquely for each page on your website. I've referred to this many times before, but the message bears repeating: the META data fields are there for the purpose of letting the search engines know about your site, what it contains and how they should treat it.
Different search engines use different META tags in different ways, and those ways will change over time. So fill them all out.
If you're not sure how to do that use this tool here http://www.htmlbasix.com/meta.shtml and copy the code they give you onto your page between your HEAD tags
2. Create a site map of your site. This is another aid for the search engines and will enable them to crawl and index your site more thoroughly.
If you've not created a site map before build one here. http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/. Again, follow their instructions and upload the file they create for you to your site.
3. Google's Webmaster tools is a great service - and it's free. So open a free Google account, set up Webmaster Toots and start using it. Webmaster Tools will ask you to verify your site by uploading a file containing some code they give you.
Be sure to click the 'submit sitemap' button on the Sitemap page after you've uploaded the file and verified your site.
Once they've verified your site they'll continually analyse it and highlight warnings or problems they find that may be making it difficult for the Google bot to crawl it. They'll also provide you with statistics on when they crawled your site and last downloaded your sitemap.
Through Webmaster Tools you'll also get access to Google's Webmaster Guidelines. This is a great set of guidelines for setting up your site properly and effectively.
Using Google's Webmaster Tools is a great way to make sure your site is clearly visible to Google and to find and correct any problems that may be hindering the search engine robots.
4) Submit your site to Google. Actually - you don't need to submit it if you've taken the steps above. Taking these steps will ensure that the Google bot finds and crawls your site properly and regularly.
To check that your site has been indexed, type this command into Google: site:www.yoursite.com. That search term will return a list of the pages on your site that Google has indexed.
If your website hasn't been listed (i.e. if there are no results from that search) you can submit your site manually here: http://www.google.com/addurl.html.
If you follow these steps with your next site it will be listed earlier and showing up in the search results more quickly.

The basic criterion used to return relevant search results for a specific user query is more or less similar for every search engine. Websites having relevant content and appropriate usage of keywords primarily in the title tags, meta tags and web page body usually achieve decent rankings in the search engine results pages. However on a micro level there are differences in the ranking algorithm of Google and Yahoo or any other search engine. Following are few ways of improving the search results of a website in Google and Yahoo:
Keyword Analysis: Keyword selection should be based on two parameters; (A) The popularity of the keyword and (B) The relevance of the keyword with the website content.
Appropriate use of the keywords: There are many parameters that are taken into consideration by a search engine to rank a specific page. However presence of targeted keywords in the title tags, meta tags, anchor texts, backlinks of the webpage and headers tags (h1-h6) improves the chance of ranking high for the specific keyword query.
Page Rank: This algorithm was developed by Google to judge a website's quality. The concept of page rank is based on the premise that a good webpage will have other pages linking to it because its content has been found useful by those websites. The calculation of the page rank of a particular site depends on the page rank and relevance of the web pages linking to it.
Importance of Inbound Links :Incoming links from authoritative websites like well known media sites, educational institutions, non profit organizations, government websites and other related sites rank very high in google preference list.Links from .edu, .Gov and .org web sites are considered to be more authoritative and relevant than others . Sites like 123greetings.com and nytimes.com has a huge no of backward links which helps them in having a higher search engine rankings in their Industry .
Google Page rank Relevance: Page rank is very important for Google when it comes to analyzing a website's relevance for a keyword. Apart from it a high PR site improves the crawlability of its internal pages. The higher the Page Rank the better chance of the site to come on top of search engine listings if everything else remains the same .
Directory Listings: A website should be listed in directories like Dmoz and Yahoo directory. The inclusion in a directory depends on the scrutiny of the website by human editors and thus only quality sites get listed in the above mentioned directories. Google does not have a directory of its own, so it takes help from Dmoz to generate directory results. On the other hand Yahoo directory forms an integral factor in achieving high positions in Yahoo search. Getting listed in a directory can take anything from 3-6 months but it definitely helps in achieving good positions in the search engines.
