One of the hardest things to do for people who are in debt is to actually admit to other people that they have this problem. This may be because they feel ashamed that they have not been able to manage their finances in a better way or because they think that people may see them as some sort of failure. They will want to explore all of the possible avenues of debt consolidation and other ways of going about reducing or eradicating their debt before they are willing to admit to their friends or family that they now find themselves with a debt problem.
In many cases the longer people who are in debt wait before plucking up the courage to ask for help and to admit to being in debt, the worse the situation will become. Ever increasing interest costs can easily wear people down and can lead to feelings of desperation, depression and even at the most extreme, suicide.
My advice would be to swallow your pride and to talk to either the closest members of your family or friends. When we are in this type of depression it is often very hard to think clearly and in a logical manner but by speaking to other people in for example our family, there is a good chance that we may be given some very useful advice. The people in question may well have had similar problems themselves in the past and could explain the way in which they managed to become clear of their debts.
A friend of mine found herself in a great deal of debt and eventually went and spoke to her mother and father about it. They were quite shocked but were pleased that she felt able to talk to them about it. My friends name is Emma and luckily for her, her parents were in a financial position to help her out. They decided to pay off all of Emma's debts in order to stop all of the extra interest which she had to pay on top of the debt. They then worked out a long term repayment package which was at a rate that Emma could afford. They also made Emma promise that she would not wait before seeking help, if she ever found herself in the same position in the future.
Emma of course was very fortunate to have parents who were happy and able to help her in this way, however she still needed to have the courage to talk to them in the first place about her debt problems.
Government Help For Debt
Many credit counseling organizations claim to be non-profit and specialize in helping consumers get their debt under control and help solve their current financial problems. No not assume that the words non-profit and free are same. Some credit services may provide some free assistance, but some may in fact charge substantial fees. For this reason it is important to do your research before selecting any company to trust your financial future with.
The best help in dealing with your debt will usually be done face-to-face instead of over the phone or on the Internet. That is not to say phone or web based consulting is bad. It is often much easier to examine all your options when sitting across the table.
Your body language and facial expressions can give them some insight and help them read between the lines when making recommendations on what will best meet your needs and current financial situation.
Once you begin to do some research you'll most likely find you are not alone and many friends and family members have dealt with debt and money problems. Unfortunately managing money is not taught in school! Start asking around and gather your research from others along with your financial institution and local consumer protection agency. They can be excellent resources.
What Should you Look for?
The best organizations can give assistance and advise you on ways you can better deal with debt. They should at a minimum give some guidance on:
* How to can manage your finances, money and debts more effectively
* Help you to develop a workable budget
They may even know where to find or offer free educational materials and workshops.
Whoever you select they need to be trained and certified in the world of money, budgeting, consumer credit and debt management. You need a company that can assist in all facets of your financial situation working towards developing a plan personalized to your needs.
A personal appointment is usually the first step in taking action. The initial counseling session will typically last for an hour or more. Depending on your debt position additional sessions may be required.
Before making any appointments or commitments grab as much free information as possible to evaluate potential companies to work with. When requesting this information limit the amount of details concerning your financial status. Remember they are being interviewed by you to see if they provide what you need. Take that into account even with a interest free credit cards for balance transfers - read the fine print.
Any company offering financial help but does not want to provide any background about their company and the way they work you be avoided. Take the time to make an informed choice - you financial future is at stake.
