Grayline New York City Tours

    View:
Times Square

One of the most popular attractions on any New York City tour is Times Square, originally named after the New York Times, which had moved there in 1924. Frequently seen in movie scenes, this neon-lit tourist attraction and city center is in the heart of the Theatre District. Hotels, commercial businesses and towering office buildings now populate a lot of space in Times Square with Disney and Conde Nast being two of the more renowned businesses. If your New York City tour happens to take place during the New Year celebration, be sure to join the crowd gathered in this bustling square as they frolic the night away in a gigantic street party topped off with watching the ball drop atop Times Tower.

Central Park

This beautiful park is a second favorite for New York City tours and is conveniently located right in the heart of Manhattan, stretching from Midtown to Harlem. Created in 1857 by Frederick Law Olmstead and Calvert Vaux this rolling oasis of pastures and gardens provides a gentle resting spot to relax in with an afternoon walk. There's a chance love could peek in on your tour of New York City as you gaze into the Bethseda Fountain on Bethseda Terrace. Heading north you'll find the marvelous mystery that is Belvedere Castle or you could stop by the nearby Delacorte Theater and catch some of the summer plays. A delightful little zoo is available to children of all ages, and a restored carousel is sure to pique the fancy of any light-hearted soul.

Metropolitan Museum of Art

For the culturally minded New York City tour go-er, the Metropolitan Museum of Art is sure to spark your interest. Any visitor to New York should spend at least a couple hours wandering the halls of this vast and culturally diverse museum. Having more than 1.5 million square feet of exhibition space it houses European paintings by Monet, Degas, Van Gogh, and Vermeer as well as an Egyptian Gallery that is unmatched. Asian artwork, photography, armory, and sculpture also abound in this magnificent museum built in 1895 by Richard Morris Hunt. Should you be touring New York City during the warmer months, be sure to see the open-air roof garden where modern-day sculptures are displayed.

St. Patrick's Cathedral

Architecturally astounding, this massive cathedral located across from Rockerfeller Center on Fifth Avenue is the largest Catholic cathedral in the United States, making it another popular New York City tour stop. With a seating capacity of 2,500, several altars and stained glass windows, 330-foot towering spires, and an enormous pipe organ it's no wonder many New Yorkers duck in for a moment of peace in the otherwise hectic daily life of the city. Services are held all through the day and can likely accommodate even the busiest of New York City tour schedules. All of these sites and so far the most well-known of attractions remain unseen, it truly is a spectacular place to visit at any time of year.
Grayline New York City Tours
New York City is known for many things. From museums to monuments, there are many things to see. New York City has so much to offer, it is hard to tackle the city on your own. However, tours, whether by bus or on foot, can sometimes be expensive. Instead of having to wander your way through the city, take advantage of some of the free tours the city has to offer. You are guaranteed not to miss a thing, and to stay within your budget.

The Alliance for Downtown New York has compiled two different kinds of tours to work with different schedules, and show you the many sights of the city. The first tour is the Wall Street Walking Tour. This tour begins every Thursday and Saturday at noon. The tour takes walkers past icons like the New York Stock Exchange, Trinity Church, and Federal Hall. The tour begins on the steps of the National Museum of the American Indian at number 1 Bowling Green. The other tour begins every Tuesday at noon and is called the Historic Downtown Walking Tour. The tour hits sites such as the African Burial Ground, the Woolworth Building, and City Hall. This tour begins from the NYC Heritage Tourism Center. Each tour lasts about one and one-half hours, and no reservations are necessary.

One of the more unique tours in the city is called the Surveillance Camera Outdoor Walking Tours. Unknown to many people, New York City has thousands of security cameras placed in many areas around the city. This interesting and unique walking tour will show walkers more about the cameras, and explain the special system that helps to trace New Yorkers' every move and keep the city a little safer. If you or members of your group are interested in some science, technology, or one of the things that makes New York tick, this tour will be interesting for your. These tours start at 2pm on Sunday afternoons at various places around the city.

If nature is what you are into, there are two tours designed for you. The first is the Central Park Conservancy Walking Tour. This tour takes anywhere from 60 to 90 minutes, and they run year-round. The tours in Central Park are varied as well, with everything from landscaping to the Revolutionary War. The second tour related to the outdoors is the Prospect Park Discover Nature Tours. This tour takes place in Brooklyn, and shows visitors parts of Brooklyn they may not know exists. The tour will show you a rehabbed ravine, waterfalls, and Brooklyn's last forest. Many enjoy the tour because it is like taking a step outside of the city and getting to see nature, while still being able to grab a bite to eat at a restaurant only moments after.

Tours in New York City are diverse in every area. While there are so many free tours, it may seem silly to pay for one. Even when you do pay, you can find tours that are as low as $5. There are so many things in New York it may seem overwhelming to visitors, but just know there are many free or very inexpensive tours that can guide you around the city and ensure you don't miss a thing.
