Green Building Council Certification

    View:
The difference between the average persons life in 1907 and 2007 is laughably huge. Frankly, the century has been unlike any other, but so has our consumption of resources. Only now are we starting to realize the impact on the planet.

Ironically, we already know about the impact of the waste we create on our lives. From the smog impacted city of Los Angeles to the toxic rivers in the east, we have seen and at least partially dealt with the problems arising from the waste produced by our society.

Looking around us today, smog seems a rather small problem. Our world is getting hotter. With this will come changes. Weather will become more severe, and water is forecast to become scarce.

As you know, there is a great debate about climate change. Many people think it is over whether climate change exists. This is incorrect. The question is the cause of the heating of the planet. As the ice caps melt, the question is whether we are the cause.

You may or may not believe emissions from our way of life is the cause of climate change. What is clear is that we not helping the problem at a minimum. This has resulted in many areas with an effort to find solutions to the problem. Green construction is one such solution.

Just what is green building? Is it some hippie concept? Nope. It is the idea of building efficient energy structures while minimizing environmental impact. This can be for housing or large building such as The Solaire in New York City.

Efficiency is about low energy control. Many green buildings filter their air through plant life. They recycle their water. They use recycled materials for building elements from newspapers for insulation to steel from demolished structures.

The design will also take advantage of the environment. The positioning of the structure may be used to incorporate passive solar heating from the sun. To cool the structure, windows that may be opened will be used in lieu of air conditioning.

There is little argument that green building is a new concept and thus still struggling to become a standard. That being said, the fact that individual and large businesses are looking to it is a good sign. Perhaps we are turning a corner.

Reuse and recycling of products and materials is what green homes believe in. Make use of products which are energy or water efficient; such products use healthy, non-toxic materials. Hence, these products are made from recycled or renewable sources and can be used later again. This way, you can achieve more environmentally efficient buildings by using products that are durable and more efficient. Bio-degradable products are used precisely for this. In turn, green building reduces building impacts on human health and the environment by implementing improved site location, design, construction, operation, maintenance, and removal - encompassing the complete life cycle of building. A structure designed to conserve resources and reduce negative impacts on the environment, whether it is energy, water, building materials or land. There has been a need for green building or eco homes as the result of increase in population, finite sources of energy and materials are being depleted, or one can say it has been endangered. Environment is being polluted or spoiled. Hence, the need for green building has increased and there's has been a focus on repairing the damage caused by the less eco friendly or non sustainable home methods has had on the environment. Let us not, damage the environment and take up a social responsibility towards it and live in a state of equilibrium with the nature and restore the environmental balance.

Moreover, such green buildings help us reduce our operating costs promoted by increasing productivity and using less energy and water. Ease down the environmental impacts by means of, for example, lessening storm water runoff and the heat island effect. Enhance public and occupant health as a result of improved indoor air quality too. Bring in an aesthetic harmony along with ecological balance between the structure and its surrounding natural and built environment.
