The roots of the modern guitar can be traced back millenia with many of the ancient instruments having characteristics similar to the modern instrument. Even though the guitar most frequently possesses six or twelve strings there are others which can have four, five, seven, eight and ten strings. For many decades this musical instrument has played the leading role in the changing styles of popular music and even after the invention of synthesizers, and virtual instruments, the guitar is the lead instrument in most types of music such as rock and blues.
With so many ways of writing music on home computers you will find it surprising to learn that for several years now the popularity of the guitar has been slowly increasing with more people aquiring and trying to learn how to play the guitar. While some have the target of being a rock legend the majority just aim to learn how to play well for the enjoyment of it.
The largest number of folk learn to play the guitar by buying a teach yourself guitar book. There is a variety of books which include audio CDs that make the learning much easier. These publications generally show you a selection of basic chords and bar chords as well as power chords and a small selection of basic songs.
A more exciting method of learning how to play is by purchasing a DVD or, even better, an interactive DVD which will teach you several different styles and techniques. As well as tuition DVDs offering introductory lessons it is possible to aquire specialist versions which teach you how to play like a particular guitarist. Often these contain a collection of tunes by that band so that you can master their methods.
As well as learning from interactive DVDs on your computer you can also get guitar courses online. Some people offer lessons on a one to one basis via webcams and downloadable material. Many people play the console game "Guitar Hero" and it is also possible get a similar thing online but for real guitars. Line 6 offers an amazing monthly membership plan which has a superb selection of tunes to play along to with or without the guitar track.
Electric or Acoustic
The acoustic guitar is available in a number of styles but all rely upon a sound box behind the strings to amplify the sound of the modulating strings. Most people have had sight of a classical guitar and most acoustic guitars are of this type, however there are many other designs available such as the Resonator.
The electric guitar is the best known type however it is available in such a wide variety of styles that you are very much restricted by your own imagination. There are a few classic styles such as the Gibson Les Paul, Fender Stratocaster (or shortened to Strat) and Fender Telecaster which are the most famous. But, with digital technology, these three famous guitars and more can be found in a guitar called the Variax which uses modeling technology to create the tone of the instrument to sound pretty much the same as the original.
In the past most folk learned guitar on an acoustic model but the price of electric guitars has fallen so much that it is now possible to purchase a full package, guitar, amplifier, strap and tuition book/CD, for almost the same price as a quality acoustic.
Remember if you are starting to learn how to play guitar you muststart at the beginning! Sadly many folk assume that they can master a guitar classic immediately, but, with a just a little effort and time you may find yourself to be on the first steps to becoming a the meanest guitar master.
Guitar Playing Made Easy
How can you learn to play guitar by not playing? Is it really possible to develop as a guitarist without touching the instrument?
In weight training it is an established fact that muscle growth takes place during rest, for example when you sleep. It doesn't mean that you will become a famous muscle builder by sleeping. Sleeping is just a part of the overall picture called muscle growth.
Don't ever think that you will become a good guitarist by not playing guitar at all!
But I define a good guitarist as a good musician. A good musician can convey his musical emotions to somebody else and this ability takes more than just practicing moving the fingers among all those guitar strings.
What can you do to become a better guitarist and a musician when you don't play? Let me give you a few suggestions:
1. If you play classical guitar, get into the habit of often reading guitar sheet music without your guitar. This practice gives you training in the art of hearing the sheet music in your head and also gives you a better chance to really learn notational symbols in the music and rhythmic subtleties.
2. Take a week off from your guitar playing every now and then and use all your musical energy listening to good music or just being a good citizen. Learn to spot musical and artistic heights in the music. Listen to all types of instrumentalists. With concentration. My best listening position is laying flat on my bed with headphones on forgetting the rest of the world. Maybe you have another approach.
If you feel and enjoy musical and artistic expressions in the music these will probably be implemented in your own guitar playing sooner or later.
3. Be a good musical friend by helping somebody else to play. It will help you become more unselfish and like people more. Well, maybe you already like people sufficiently but to learn to like people is part of our development as musicians as we are supposed to give of ourselves to others when we play.
4. Prepare your body and mind for playing guitar by learning the art of relaxation and stretching your muscles. You can of course find articles on these subjects on the net. Performing in a relaxed manner will help you enjoy your own music more and will help your public to relax and enjoy your music too.
5. Take time to sit down, or stand up if you like, and ponder about what guitar playing means to you. Is there something that you would like to develop in your guitar playing that will give you more joy and happiness. Set a realistic goal and write down what you can do every week to accomplish that goal.
I believe in practicing on my guitar of course but I hope that these pieces of advice concerning not playing guitar will increase your love for your guitar and the art of playing and giving musical joy to others!
