The popular online art gallery, OverstockArt.com, has officially released the annual "Top 10 Oil Paintings" rankings for 2008. After a complete domination of the top spot by the world renowned Dutch master, Vincent Van Gogh, a relative new comer has taken over. Gustav Klimt with his masterpiece - "The Kiss" blew everyone away with his unique style and colors.



According to David Sasson, CEO of OverstockArt.com, the company releases its Top 10 list of best selling art each year to show which oil paintings are the "trendiest, most desirable" on the market -- a fact, he says, many people are interested to know.

"A lot of people want to know what's selling best because it gives direct indication of what's popular and what their respective peer groups are going to enjoy," he said. "This is especially true in the business world where offices have to keep up with the latest interior d'cor trends and maintain a sense of modern quality to impress customers and clients... a lot of business owners and managers like to make sure they're staying hip as the circles of fashion turn."

According to Sasson's statistics, Gustav Klimt's The Kiss is the most popular oil painting on the planet. "Klimt has been the rising star of the Modern art world over the past few years, with notable paintings such as the Kiss and Adele Bloch-Bauer which in 2006, snatched the title of most expensive oil painting ever sold at auction, $135 Million."

Vincent Van Gogh, might have relinquished his top spot to Klimt in the individual masterpiece category, but is still the most popular artist in the world with both Starry Night and Caf? Terrace snatching the second and third spots respectively. His total sales numbers have left everyone well behind.

Other noted artists who made the list are Claude Monet, Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, and Pier Auguste Renoir.
