For some people, Halloween is not just about dressing up ? it is about having the best Halloween costume. If you are out to win a Halloween costume contest this year, here are some helpful tips for making the most out of your Halloween costume.
Take it to the max
Whatever you decide on for your Halloween costume, you have to go all out. Think about the details! You want to get every accessory that you can find for your Halloween costume, and make sure that everything goes together seamlessly. Besides the main portion of the Halloween costume, you will want to make sure that your head and feet are also in the spirit. And don't forget any accessories that you could carry with you, like a magic wand or a broomstick or a pitchfork. If you are buying a premade Halloween costume, the best way to make it your own is through some truly spectacular accessories.
Use your best points
Consider what your best attributes are and incorporate them into your Halloween costume. If you look like a celebrity, dress like them in one of their starring roles. If you have fantastic legs go for a sexy Halloween costume. If you have an amazing sense of humor, go for a funny Halloween costume. Remember, your attitude makes the costume just as much as the costume itself. If you are going to be Elvis, put a swagger in your step. Don't just wear the costume ? be the costume.
Consider all options
Brainstorm several costume ideas. Sometimes the best Halloween costume is not the one that you think of first, but rather later on. And sometimes the best Halloween costume idea is not able to be realistically used ? either because of lack of time, money, or the ability to come up with the costume pieces. By having a few Halloween costume ideas on the table you can experiment to find out which one is the perfect fit for you and your personality.
Know the rules
Of course, if you want to win a Halloween costume contest you need to know the rules of the game. Depending on the party or the location of the contest, there may be a set of rules to follow. You may have to fall within a certain age category. You may have to keep your Halloween costume within a certain theme. You may only be able to use store bought costumes instead of homemade costumes or vice versa. Make sure that you are clear on all the rules before heading to the Halloween costume store.
Have fun
Lastly, it is important to remember to have fun. Even if you don't win the Halloween costume contest, you should still be able to look back on the event and say that you had a good time participating. Halloween is about having fun and dressing up in a costume, so make sure that you are doing both. You can even get ideas from the winning Halloween costume to inspire you for next year's Halloween costume event.
Halloween Costume Contest Winners
After years and years of watching other people walk away from Halloween parties with the coveted Most Creative Halloween Costume prize, you are going to make sure that you win this year. But, how are you going to make that happen? Read on to get some great ideas to think about so that you can make your best costume ever.
My best strategy for winning a Halloween costume contest is to be overtly original. If you buy your costume off the rack either online or off, you're pretty much doomed to failure. If they've seen it, they've seen it! Originality is everything here, and you can't afford to be like the crowd if you want to win the contest!
One great way to make a creative costume is to play off of a recent news story involving a famous person. Costumes of this nature will work out even better if the news story has been embarrassing or misfortunate. Consider some examples of just how you can pull it off. You could choose to dress up as Paris Hilton, well accessorized and dressed in a prison outfit. Other options could be Lindsay Lohan desperately searching for a fix, the Obama girl, or Michael Vick dragging a dead dog behind him on a leash.
This type of costume can work out extremely well. Unfortunately, it can also completely fail if other people are not able to recognize you easily. If you do not naturally look anything like the celebrity that you are trying to dress as, you will need to invest a lot of effort into your make up and hair so you can make the costume believable.
Not only that, but you need to be sold out to the idea of portraying this person. That means acting like they would act, talking like they would talk, and in general becoming that person for the duration of the party. (Or at least until the judging is done!)
Make sure you fit into this costume concept. If you're trying to portray Will Smith when your body more closely resembles Norbitt, then we've got a problem from the get-go! Also, if your costume has you exposed more than you might be normally, make sure you can live with this. If you're going to dress up as Brittany Spears and are uncomfortable showing the amount of everything she shows, then rethink your costume! If you look the least bit uncomfortable either in concept or execution, people will notice.
If you are going as a couple, just be sure and not do what everyone else has done before. Originality wins, particularly in couples contests!
Remember that the whole point of participating in a creative costume contest at a Halloween party is for you to have some real fun. Don't lose sight of that while you are working hard to prepare your creative outfit.
