Hand Painted Childrens Furniture

    View:
Too often, parents who want the best furniture for their children look for the highest price, believing that high cost means high quality. While the most expensive might be the best, it is not always the case.

Unfortunately, the reasons a particular piece of children's furniture is expensive might have relatively little to do with the quality of the furniture. Many companies have high marketing and advertising costs. That money goes into creating the impression of quality without really having any more quality than a less expensive option.

Other children's furniture might be more expensive simply because it is imported. For whatever reason, when we hear that something is ?European? we automatically believe it is superior. This is true for everything from automobiles to children's furniture. But why is this so? Many of the brands that enjoy excellent reputations in North America are just ?run of the mill? in their home countries.

So how can you spot the best children's furniture for your needs? While it may not be the most expensive, it is probably not the cheapest either. Don't cut corners when it comes to your children's furniture. You should be willing to pay a solid price for solid quality, features and durability. And that's where your search for the best children's furniture begins:

Takes a Beating

Think about how much of a beating your children's furniture takes and you will start to get an idea about what you need. Looking for a way to ease teething pains, babies will chew on crib rails incessantly. If you think baby teeth can't do any damage, look at the handrail of a low quality crib.

Older children don't seem to understand that most furniture has a single function. A desk for studying becomes a launch pad for flights onto mattresses, or a work bench for creating mutant popsicle stick creatures. It's more abuse than most furniture takes in a lifetime. So you need to look for different characteristics in children's furniture than you would in your regular furniture.

Get the best quality furniture you can afford if you don't want to keep buying new furniture every year. Check it out yourself. You can tell how well children's furniture is made from the feel of it; give a crib a good shake, or flop on a toddler's bed ? you'll be able to feel the quality. Ask sales people about construction methods, materials and why they think their furniture will outlast someone else's.

But good quality does not mean you will be able to use your furniture for a long time. Babies will outgrow the best crib set in just a couple of years. Older children's growth spurts will quickly make the bed that they have used comfortably for years suddenly be too small. Quality isn't just about being really well made. Quality can also mean practicality. Some furniture makers build quality children's sets that can adjust with your children as they grow. Cribs can be converted into beds and beds adjusted to fit your children throughout their growth years.

How Useful Is It?

Sometimes you never know what you are missing. You find good quality furniture at a good price and stick with it, never looking to see what else is available.

There are many useful features in some children's furniture that, if you don't know about them, you wouldn't miss them. But, any ease-of-use features on your children's furniture will probably leave you wondering how you ever got along without it.

Seemingly simple things like drawers under beds, will become indispensable to you. As a busy parent, you are constantly searching for places to put clothes, toys ? whatever ? and the space underneath your children's beds is a great place for additional, easy-to-reach storage. Even casters on a crib can make a big difference. While many cribs of varying levels of quality feature casters, you will be amazed at the difference a superior quality caster makes when you need to adjust the crib with your baby in your arms.

What else should you look for? You will appreciate any children's furniture with lots of storage space, extra shelving and easy-to-clean surfaces.

While there are other features you should consider, finding a manufacturer that builds consistently high quality furniture is also important. Mother Hubbard's Cupboard's hand-builds children's bedroom furniture sets that take a beating, have many clever features that make your life easier and are available in a number of styles and finishes to suit your d'cor.

Step 1: Sort Out Your Materials

Most of your materials should be included with your flat pack furniture. The furniture should come with an instruction manual that will contain a list of all of the materials. These materials may be coded for later use. Identify all of the included pieces and sort them by putting the same pieces together and determining the special code that is associated with them.

In addition, if you need any extra tools, be certain you have them gathered before you get started. Included tools are often smaller than normal, more difficult to work with, and are meant to be throw-away tools. You may wan to invest in a set of tools to help you complete the assembly faster. You can choose from hand tools or power tools. A good power tool set will have various size bits for a screwdriver, drill bits, sockets, and allen wrenches. If you don't already have a complete power tool set, you may prefer to hire a professional over buying new tools.

Step 2: Read Through the Directions

Before you begin the assembly process, read through the directions one time to make certain you understand them. Some of the instructions will become clearer as you get to that step in the process, but having a good idea of what is coming with the instructions will help you in the process.

This is also a good time to pull out each piece and lay them out so you can find everything. Pieces are usually marked with a letter or number so make sure you can see the markings. Sort like items together. Hardware like screws, nuts, bolts, and nails should all be kept together. If you lose a few hardware pieces, you may not be able to complete the project.

Step 3: Follow the Directions

Resist the temptation to jump right into the project or to skip steps. The directions were written in the order provided for a reason. Follow that order to make sure you do not accidentally miss a step along the way.

Step 4: Don't Do Anything Permanent Right Away

When it comes to tightening bolts or other hardware, it is generally best to loosely put them in place until you are certain you have assembled the furniture correctly. This way, it will be easier to undo if you find that you have made a mistake. Once you are certain everything is in place, you can tighten the bolts and other hardware in place.

Step 5: Check it Over

Before you let your children use the furniture, be certain to check it over for safety and security. After all, you don't want your child to get harmed by the furniture because you did something incorrectly. Make sure nothing is sticking out that could harm your child and check the furniture for stability to be certain it will be able to properly support your child.

By following these five simple steps, you will find the process of assembling your child's furniture to be less frustrating ? and, you will be a hero with your child when the furniture is complete!
