Having A Panic Attack

    View:
A panic attack can happen to anyone, however, when they become a regular occasion, it may have developed into a panic disorder. If you feel that you are in a continuous state of panic, or have recurring episodes you are most likely suffering from a panic disorder. Don't get too much anxiety though, this condition is very treatable and you can get back to normal faster than you think. The following paragraphs give a few tips on how you can identify panic attack symptoms and give tips on what you can do to diminish them or lose them altogether.

We have all heard the saying that knowledge is power, and it is no different when dealing with anxiety. Once you learn what the general symptoms of panic attacks are and how you suffer from panic attacks, you are well on your way to finding a cure. Many people share the knowledge that panic attacks are solely associated to events. An event may be a stressful exam or test in school, career choices and job interviews, and other important life events. However, this is usually not the case. Panic attacks usually occur in the most unexpected moments, even while sleeping. Knowing this however, you shouldn't assume that any time you feel stressed, you are having a panic attack. Life is full of stresses, and we all have to deal with them. It is when we experience the more serious symptoms such as heart palpitations, insomnia, dizziness, shaking, lack of oxygen, sweating, etc, that we should wonder if we are suffering from an actual panic disorder.

One of the most powerful tools we have is documentation. Writing in a journal about your feelings and anytime you experience the previously mentioned symptoms is a gigantic help to determining if you have a real problem. By doing so, you will be able to identify any patterns associated with your panic attacks. It will also be a valuable tool for your doctor to be able to use when diagnosing you and prescribing the right treatment. Many people find it hard to keep any type of journal, but if you really want to help yourself get cured, you will have to motivate yourself to continuously document your condition.

In the journal you create, you will want to be sure to record certain specific details such as how intense the attacks are, how frequent they are occurring, and also any physical symptoms that you are experiencing. If you feel that you know what may have triggered the event, be sure to write that in as well. For example possible triggers include arguments with friends or loved ones, difficulties with money, fear of losing a best friend, physical illness, or starting a new job. All of these are worthy of documenting and will help both you and your physician cure your condition.

If you feel that you have tried everything you can do yourself to stop your panic attacks, please consult with a health care professional. One of the best things you can do for yourself is to have an open two-way dialogue between you and your doctor.
Having A Panic Attack
It's an ordinary day. You are inside your room, sitting on a chair and reading a book. Suddenly, without any apparent reason, you feel your heart beating so fast. You begin to choke, and you experience chest pains. Your mind races and you feel an extreme fear. You begin feeling lightheaded, nauseous, and dizzy. You experience a tingling sensation, coupled with hot flashes or sudden chills. You sense that you are having a heart attack and that you are already going to die. You may even think that you are going crazy. Your muscle begins to tense, and then you feel body pains. Finally, it stops. This sudden period of intense anxiety lasts for about ten minutes. The scariest ten minutes of your life, you say.

After experiencing this kind of situation, most people think that they just had a heart attack or nervous breakdown. They would call for immediate medical help or drive themselves to the nearest hospitals. Medical evaluation would not present anything grave, though. The doctor would say that it was just a case of panic attack. The doctor, moreover, will assure you that panic attacks are generally harmless. Panic attacks are very common, too, affecting millions of people worldwide. According to a research study, one out of 75 people can experience a panic attack at least once in their life. Another research study says that panic attacks are more common in women than men.

Panic attack causes

A panic attack can be triggered by biological reasons. Our bodies can defend itself against stress, but there will come a point in which extreme physical reactions will be manifested. These physical reactions can be really severe, but there are also instances in which these are barely noticeable. There are individuals, too, who did not realize that they just experienced panic attacks. Panic attacks can re-occur, and those individuals who experience repeated attacks may have a panic disorder. Panic attacks can also be triggered by certain chemical substances or from its withdrawal. Aside from biological reasons, panic attacks can also be caused by certain situations, such as life transitions.

Panic attack treatment

Panic attacks can be treated and prevented. Yes, you do not have to worry about repeated panic attack experiences. Treatment methods for panic attacks include therapy, medication and relaxation techniques. Therapy should be administered by a qualified therapist. Therapy can be cognitive behavioral or exposure. Sessions will be set-up by therapists, and these can entail support from family and friends. Medication, which is an effective treatment method, includes antidepressants. Other forms of medication can be for temporary use only. Some may even be addictive. For the prevention of panic attacks, relaxation techniques, such as meditation and visualization, are duly recommended.

A caution, though, for those individuals who experience panic attacks repeatedly. A panic attack is similar to having an asthma or heart attack. Panic attacks can occur together with other medical disorders, too. Therefore, it is still wise to consult a competent doctor to rule out any other medical disorder possibilities.
