There are a large number of people that are covered by their employer's health insurance program. Early retirement from that job will mean that the coverage from that program will also end. Because of their age, early retirees are not eligible for Medicare. Often times the market also refuses to cover them because of their age.
There are some companies that are working to expand coverage to their retirees, but those are few and far between. For the most part, early retirees will have to pay large premiums for health insurance or else find a new way to cover rising health care costs. Some are looking to Health Savings Accounts combined with High Deductible Health Insurance policies to cover their needs.
It is likely that the increase in early retirees (from the baby boomers closing in on early retirement). Companies are more eager to offer the supplemental health insurance policies that some get once Medicare kicks in.
In the mean time, it is a good idea for those considering early retirement to start looking into an insurance policy that they can afford (or that they can carry before retirement and continue after retirement). Health care costs are on the rise and those are the types of expenses that retirees don't want to see eating away at their nest egg.
Health Insurance For Retirees
There are many advantages to getting several health insurance quotes before you decide to buy a health insurance plan. The biggest one of these is that you have ammunition in hand when you get ready to talk to an insurance agent. What I mean by "ammunition" is that, by having several health insurance quotes from other companies this will definitely give you leverage when determining the cost of a policy.
Please don't misunderstand what I'm trying to say here. Any good insurance agent is going to get you the best possible health policy at the lowest possible price, but having a few other health insurance quotes in your hand when you walk into their office is going to show them that you mean busines, you have at least a general idea of what you're doing and that you are serious about buying a health insurance policy for either yourself or your family. By doing this they will in turn do everything within their power to get you a good, affordable plan and keep you from walking out the door and taking your business elsewhere. In other words, you would be more in control of the situation.
Medical care is not cheap these days so you'll want to do as much research as you possibly can and do plenty of shopping around, including getting yourself several free health insurance quotes so you can get the best possible deal when you are finally ready to buy a policy.
