Help Child Learn To Read

    View:
By now you've heard we are a country in an educational crisis. One report in Time Magazine (April, 2006) says that one in four students will drop out before graduating high school. In Reader's Digest (September, 2006) it's reported that only one in three eighth grade students scored at grade level for math, reading and science.

We need to get our act together.

The calls have gone out for support to the parents and I'm sure they've heard them loud and clear. More parental involvement is a great way to help your child remain motivated and interested in school. Most parents understand what they need to do.

However, many parents can't seem to find the time to help. It's not because they are bad. But rather, they get called to help right at the moment of doing something else. (which, unfortunately never gets done).

The parent gets stressed because they were in the middle of something and the child is upset because mom is upset. And all the while, the clock keeps ticking.

I have a few suggestions that will help you give the support to your child and still have time for your to-do list.

The first thing is to have a set time for homework. This way you can plan accordingly. If homework starts after dinner, and the other parent is at home, someone can be in charge of the kids while the other can clean the kitchen.

However, in the event you're home alone, here's what to do: Set a planned homework time. Either before dinner or after. Homework needs to be done during this time. You can set your schedule and be available for help.

Without setting a planned time, you're asking to be interrupted while doing something else. With a plan, you know you will have time (in theory) later on.

The second thing is to learn how to work with your kids. I'm a teacher and even I don't have the patience I need with my own boys. This normally leads to a prolonged study session and a lot of wasted time.

Remember, depending on the ages of your children, their ability to grasp things varies. It does no one any good to create tension when one of them doesn't understand something. It's up to you to handle it. Regardless of whether they hit your hot buttons or not, you must remain calm and patient. You'll finish earlier and save a lot of time.

Finally, you need to find resources that are 'parent friendly.' That is to say, they are instantly understandable and explainable to your child. Whatever the subject, the materials need to be simple and straightforward. No wasted time, no frustration, no disappointment.

By keeping these points in mind, you can move from quantity time to quality time with your kids and still have moments to spare for everything else.
Help Child Learn To Read
The challenge of teaching children to learn to read at home can be very much like teaching them to learn to read in the traditional classroom. Success heavily depends on the development of a reading program that embraces all available resources and one that is geared toward the unique learning style of the child. The splendid news is that there are free reading resources available to help homeschooling educators present fresh and interesting material to new students while they learn to read.

Using Worksheets and Practice Sheets to Teach Children Learn to Read

Experts agree that, no matter what method is used to teach kids to learn to read, children need to be provided with some form of practice and educators need to have a viable method of assessing progress. And, although many homeschooling parents shy away from the use of worksheets and practice sheets when facilitate the process of learning to read, both of these can be viable forms of reading aids when used properly. And, creatively using these tools can not only provide learners with the practice they need to become good readers, they can also help hold the interest of a child who has trouble focusing.

No longer do reading worksheets have to be the dull, standardized materials found in many classrooms nationwide. The internet and other homeschooling parents both house a wealth of ideas for creative worksheets. And, the educator interested in personalizing a child's learning to read instruction can even create their own worksheets based on the interests of a particular child. A child who is fascinated with sports can be provided with sports-related worksheets. A child with a particular interest in animals can be given worksheets that focus on pets. Many of the worksheets that can be found online can be altered to reflect the interests of the child.

Additional Tools to Help Homeschool Parents Facilitate Teaching Their Children Learn to Read

Homeschooling educator networks, seasoned teachers, and the internet are all wonderful resources for reading lesson plans, activities, and programs. The internet has opened up a world full of sites where in-school educators and homeschooling parents "gather" to share their ideas for creative lesson plans and activities such as book reports and writing activities. Any homeschooling parent who finds themselves at a loss for new material can visit the internet for reading resources.

The good news is that, with a little creativity and a home computer, parents and homeschooling educators can personalize many of these worksheets to reflect the interest of the child(ren) they teach them to learn to read. Worksheets that cannot be personalized can still provide a wealth of resource ideas for worksheet and practice sheet design and creation. There are so many fresh ideas for worksheets and lesson plans available online and in homeschooling groups that there is no need to shun the use of these viable reading tools.

Homemade worksheets used together with new electronic reources, such as computer programs that can individualize the instruction for each student, have been found to result in increased student success. The central idea is to supplement an established program with learning to read resources that mirror the strengths and focus of the child.
