In many cases acne will have been caused because a person's sebaceous glands are actually producing too much oil (sebum). Because of this increased production the pores on the skin are likely to become blocked and then spots caused by bacteria begin to form. Often when a person visits their doctor they will be prescribed some anti-biotic medication in order to treat the condition. But a lot of people are now preferring to use herbal remedies for acne simply because they are less likely to cause unwanted side effects unlike more conventional treatments.
In this article we take a look at some of the various different types of herbal remedies that you yourself may want to consider using for treating your acne. But if you do it is important that you actually speak with your doctor first in case there is some other underlying medical condition causing your problem.
1. Aloe Vera - This particular herb contains anti-inflammatory and immune stimulant properties. Plus the aloe gel also contains anti-bacterial and astringent properties both of which can help to fight the bacteria, which is causing the acne to erupt. To use this type of herbal remedy you need to apply the gel directly to the area of skin that is affected.
2. Calendula - Although not as popular as Aloe Vera or other herbal remedies for acne this is still an effective one. Not only does it help with healing damaged skin tissue but it contains anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties as well. Many people will apply this herb directly to the skin when it has been made into a cream or when it has been infused with water and then they wash their skin with it.
3. Lavender - This particular herb can help to reduce the inflammation that has been caused because of the prostaglandin inhibiting properties of it. Plus it has antiseptic properties which when the essential oil (mixed with a carrier fluid or water) is applied directly to the affected area will help to kill off the acne bacteria.
4. Tea Tree Oil - This is a very effective remedy for acne as it contains antiseptic, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties, which can help to treat the acne bacteria. In most cases it is most effective when the essential oil is mixed with water or a carried fluid and then applied directly to the areas of skin that have been affected by the acne.
Along with the herbal remedies mentioned above for treating acne there are plenty of others that you may want to try. Such as walnut leaf that has astringent properties and is best used as face or skin wash. Then there is witch hazel that just like tea tree oil contains both anti-bacterial and astringent properties, which can help to fight the bacteria causing the acne.
What is important to remember however is that these herbal remedies for acne help to treat the condition from outside. You therefore also need to look at what is actually causing the increased production of the oil (sebum) in the first place. Generally dietary and lifestyle habits can be a reason for a person who is suffering from this skin condition. So making changes to both their diet and lifestyle can further help to improve the problem.
Herbal Remedies For Sleep
Being a family physician, one of the biggest complaints I hear today is problems with sleeping. As you all know, it is a huge problem which has blossomed into a multi million dollar industry for the pharmaceutical companies with such prescription medications as Ambien, Sonata, Lunesta and Rozerem, to name a few.
What a practitioner should stress to patients is to first make sure that they are practicing good sleep hygiene habits such as not watching television in bed, not drinking caffeine or alcohol in the evening too close to bedtime, not eating a large meal or exercising too close to bedtime, and unwinding prior to hitting the bed. Easier said than done I realize. Eating a healthy diet and establishing a regular daily exercise regime can make a world of difference in enabling one to get a proper night's rest.
The most popular over-the-counter sleep aids all contain diphenhydramine, an anti-histamine most commonly known as the brand name Benadryl. Whether it is Sominex, Nytol, Tylenol PM, or any other sleep formulation you see on the shelves, most contain this ingredient. One of the unwanted side effects of this medication is that it IS an anti-histamine and will not only dry you out, but can cause urinary retention and make you feel very groggy the following morning because of its fairly long half life.
Before I prescribe one of the prescription sleeping medications, I like to recommend some other herbals which you can purchase over-the-counter and are safer and seem to work without all of the side effects associated with diphenhydramine and the prescription medications.
You may want to try one or all of the following if you haven't. An inexpensive and healthy way I use commonly to calm down before going to bed is a tea with chamomile in it. The particular brand I commonly drink is Sweet Dreams by Bigelow which is a nice combination of chamomile and mint. It works. It is also good at relieving gastrointestinal distress as well.
Another herb which I have found helpful is valerian (Valeriana officinalis). 400-900 milligrams by mouth about 30 minutes prior to going to bed is the suggested dosage. One of the brand names is Alluna which is two tablets about an hour prior to bedtime.
One herb sometimes recommended as an anxiolytic or sleep aid is Kava which I would AVOID. It IS hepatotoxic (damages the liver).
Hopefully you do not experience any problems going to sleep or staying asleep, but so many of us do and it is nice to not have to rely on the prescription "big guns" as I refer to them as for getting the sleep we need.
May this help assist in you getting a wonderful night's sleep tonight!
