It is basketball time again and you need to be in top shape. You should start early gearing up for the season because you have a lot to work on. There are many parts to playing basketball. You will need many skills and you will need to be focused in your efforts to build up your skills so that you can be the best payer possible. You want to put forth your best effort on the court and the only way to do that is to get ready for the season through some serious training.
You are going to have to work on six main things when you are training for the basketball season. You will need to stay focused and make sure that are covering all six areas. They are all important in making a great game.
Speed
While basketball may not require the extreme speed of other sports. It is still important that you work on moving quickly. You need to be able to go to the distance when it is required of you and you need to be able to do it fast.
Cardio
You need a good cardiovascular system in order to excel at any sport. You need to be able to play a game without getting winded or feeling tired. To do this you have to do some cardio training. In addition to building up your heart and lungs you will also be keeping your body toned with cardio activity.
Agility
When you are working on speed you have to work on agility. You need to be able to move quickly with grace. You want to be able to move with ease. You want to be able to make a quick turn if you need to without falling down. Agility is about coordination and balance. It is something that may come natural or something that you may end up working on in order to master.
Strength
A strong player is going to be able to withstand the demands of the game. You need to be strong so you do not tire. Being strong also helps prevent injuries. You want to include strength training as part of your training for the season. Make sure you work on all your muscle groups with your strength training workout.
Endurance
Endurance means you can play the whole game without feeling tired. You have to be able to handle even the roughest of games. Your endurance workout should push you to your limits so that you expand your limits and increase your ability to last.
Overall Skills
You should also not forget about just staying on top of your overall skills. You have to practice the things that make you a good player. Even the simple things like dribbling, still have a place in your practice routine.
These six tings may seem like a lot, but you should be able to combine them into a workout that will give you the ultimate challenge. Your training needs to be hard core if you want to excel. When you work on all six areas then you will be completely geared up for the start of basketball season.
High School Basketball Season
I am coaching a Jr High basketball team this winter. I am looking forward to it big-time. We are conducting pre-season conditioning at the moment and the turnout has been great. Every student-athlete not participating in a fall sport has been attending the sessions. As the season draws closer I am developing my overall coaching strategy for this year. I want to find the right tone to set with the players early on and then be able to continually go back to it throughout the season. Some people call this concept having a theme for the season. I like that concept.
Many teams will find a word to pick that will be their central theme for the year. The goal is to use the word throughout the season to have it stick in the player's minds when the times are difficult or they are in need of inspiration. The theme is typically a word that will help to take the team to the next level as it is embraced. I overheard one local football coach say that their theme for the year is One, which means they want to win one game. For the record, I am looking for semething a little more motivational than that.
Our varsity team at the high school has struggled to be 500 for the last several years. Injuries, bad calls, new coaches, bad grades, bad parents - the list goes on as to the reasons behind it. Please notice I did not mention that we have not been very good, but that has been the main driver behind the poor seasons. Schools all go through time frames like this. Ours has just stayed a little longer than we expected. One of the first things our new coach did was set the theme - Believe.
I think this theme fits us for a great many reasons. The first is quite obvious in that I think our teams have lost the ability to believe we can win games. The second reason is that a team needs to believe in all things basketball to get every player focused on their personal improvement, something that has been lacking at our schoool of late. A winning atmosphere will find the players forming bonds with each other that will last a lifetime and help immediately to boost each other and win games. That atmosphere is missing at the varsity level of our school. The Jr High program this year will begin to change that atmosphere. As the players improve their skills and move up the basketball ranks at our school I hope the attitude remains with them.
Measuring success by reviewing actual player development is the best way to look at a Jr High program. When we are able to teach the players to play at a fast pace with good fundamentals and have them always play great defense we can count the season as a successful one. I BELIEVE I can do a great job for the team and the players this season.
