Typically, social stereotypes have led society to believe that it's the vain, superficial women who chose to have cosmetic surgery. It is no secret that a boost in confidence and having a positive self-image can contribute to a woman's over all well being but the majority of women do not have cosmetic surgery for anyone other than themselves.
Some of the common misconceptions about why women have cosmetic surgery are:
1.They do it to attract men.
Husband chasing after a younger woman?
2.They do it to boost their career.
It's easier to find a job if you are "attractive."
3.They do it for vanity.
I must have the perfect body.
4.They do it to look better than the neighbors.
They just have to look better than all their friends.
5.They do it too look like their favorite movie star.
Then their life will be glamorous and exciting too!
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgery, the number one reason women have cosmetic surgery is because:
They are unhappy with their body.
Almost ? of women surveyed said they think about their size and shape every day.
This is a very significant number of women and mothers in our society who want to improve their appearance. Cosmetic surgery has become a mainstream phenomenon and it is women just like you who are the real face of cosmetic surgery. That is the reality, and the real reason why 9.9 million women had cosmetic surgery last year alone.
Cosmetic surgery can have a dramatic positive effect on a woman's physical appearance. There is a direct link between a woman's physical appearance and her emotional well-being. Many women feel that the changes due to weight gain/loss, pregnancy, breastfeeding, gravity and aging leaves them feeling less than attractive and uncomfortable with their bodies. These things can often leave women to feel awkward and embarrassed, causing them to shy away from not only public situations but intimate as well.
For women who already have a positive out look on life and are just dissatisfied with one or two specific areas, cosmetic surgery will often brighten their already positive outlook. Most often they become far more energized about their personal physical appearance and get a boost in their levels of self confidence. Women no longer have to feel guilty or let stereotypes force them into living in a body that they don't like. Whether they are a college graduate, a mom, working professional or wife and anything else, they can also look like the woman that they want to be, with no apologies.
If having cosmetic surgery is something that you have thought about, then the first step is to find a board certified surgeon in your area.

Looking attractive and full of youthful vitality even at fifty is no longer the dreams of romantic fools. What you need a little bit of cosmetic surgery and it is time to encounter a new face in the mirror sans all the irritating marks of growing age----the sagging skin, double chin, crows feet all over the face and forehead, bags under the eyes and so on. With cosmetic techniques becoming far fetched, less invasive and less expensive, more and more common people today are able to fulfill their dreams about a flawless looks---both of their face and of their bodies. Dissatisfied over the shape of your nose, the lips appear to be too thin, a protruding tummy affecting your self esteem----these are some of the problems the twenty first century people are not ready to put up with. And this explains the dramatic increase in the number of cosmetic surgery cases over a decade.
However, The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) strongly recommends that patients should do extensive research before undergoing plastic surgery. This is because, while cosmetic surgeries generally produce dramatic results, there are cases where patients regret their uninformed decision followed by dissatisfactory results.
Here are some points you need to consider before undergoing plastic surgery:
Many patients view cosmetic correction as a life changing solution. But aesthetic outcome of any cosmetic surgery may vary with individual patients and that is why you must have realistic expectations about the outcome of surgery. Avoid the over-hyped publicities; instead research well about the limitations of the surgery you are planning to undergo.
You also have to know you surgeon well. The aesthetic outcome of any cosmetic procedure depends most on the hands of your surgeon. Make sure, your surgeon has a proven track record in the field of cosmetic surgery. A reference from your friends can help you find an efficient plastic surgeon.
The most important point to learn is the risk factors associated with cosmetic surgeries. This is after all a surgery and no surgery can be completely devoid of some risks such as infections. The cosmetic surgeries come with the risk of dissymmetrical outcome, removal of too much skin, internal bleeding and so on. Before jumping into decision, make your doctor clearly explain the possible risk factors.
There are many cosmetic procedures that are aimed from enhancing your features to contouring your body---but not all the procedures are suitable for all patients. Make sure you qualify for a certain procedure.
Lastly, whatever may be your intention for undergoing cosmetic surgery or whatever procedure you may have chosen, do not forget to do adequate homework. As said by Dr. Roxanne Guy, president of ASPS, "You can afford to be nonchalant about some things, but surgery is not one of them."
