But it's interesting to note that the very first millionaire wasn't a miner. The first millionaire from the California Gold Rush was a man by the name of Samuel Brannan. Mr. Brannan set up a store to sell gold prospecting supplies, and within a year had revenue of $150,000 a month. And in 1850 $150,000 was a LOT of money!
In other words, the wealth wasn't just in the gold, it was in the shovels, picks and gold pans that the miners needed. Since then, marketers have adopted this as an analogy, and we still talk about selling "shovels to miners", but how can that help YOU build an online network marketing business?
The best way I know of to take advantage of this powerful marketing strategy is through a Funded Proposal. Simply put, a funded proposal is a method of selling an inexpensive item to people in your target market. When they buy the product, you then know that you have a very serious prospect, who is not only interested in your niche, but is willing to invest in their own business.
One way I do this is by marketing an e-book that has something they want- in my case a powerful e-book about how to stop chasing people and start ATTRACTING them into their business. This is information network marketers crave. So they go to my capture page, enter their info, and about 5% buy the book. So for every thousand leads I sell five books at $37, a total of $1850.
But the free leads is the best part, not the money. As a matter of fact, I actually don't plan on getting rich selling shovels. My passion is for online network marketing, and my goal is to build a team of 100,000 people. So the best part of the equation for me isn't the money (although that's nice!), it's the fact that I am generating extremely high quality, targeted leads of people who are experienced network marketers, and now I have a chance to get to know them and eventually show them my business.
Rookies to online network marketing wonder why they should use a Funded Proposal system to market their business. They can't understand why they shouldn't just market their business to people directly. The answer lies in the shovel story. What I'm doing is called double dipping. I not only sell shovels to the miners, but I also have a mine. I sell them a book that teaches them something they need: how to attract people into their network marketing business. But I know that many of them have a lousy mine. That leads to the discussion, "OK, I sold you a fantastic shovel, but are you sure you're working the right mine?" If the answer is no, I can show them my business.
So the funded proposal is powerful for a variety of reasons:
1. It is a source of extra cash flow.
2. It gets me qualified leads of people in my niche. (Online Network Marketing)
3. It builds my credibility with people. They perceive me as an expert.
4. It allows me to market in places where others aren't successful. As an example, tons of network marketers are trying to recruit each other, but it doesn't work because they are all pushing their own deal, few of them are looking. But I market something they can ALL use, no matter what business they are in.
5. The funded proposal gets me the highest quality, real time leads available. Let's face it, when you buy leads from a broker you are buying low quality, used goods. But when you generate your own real time lead that aren't shared with anybody else, it's worth its weight in gold (no pun intended!)
The bottom line is this: if you are in online network marketing and you aren't using a funded proposal system, you're working too hard!

How I Raised Myself From Failure To Success In Selling
Most mlm companies today would have their distributors believe that they're not in the "sales" business. Since most people cringe at the very thought of selling, these companies like Melaleuca sugarcoat the idea for them by saying, "It's not selling, it's sharing!" They make it sound like child's play, you know a cakewalk, something so simple and easy that anyone can do it. This type of thinking has a couple very harsh consequences for Melaleuca distributors.
The first consequence is this. There isn't proper sales training for distributors to begin with. If Melaleuca is preaching that there aren't sales involved with their business, then obviously there isn't a need for any type of real sales skills. As a result, distributors are thrown to the wolves, completely unprepared to market their products and opportunity.
The second consequence is this. Melaleuca distributors are immediately set-up for failure because they're being misled about how easy and simple selling is going to be. When they actually go out and try to sell to their friends or relatives by eagerly sharing with them just how great or exciting their new product or opportunity is, they're going to be in for a nasty reality check. There will no doubt be disappointment and astonishment when they're rejected, because they followed the rules and did everything that their Melaleuca upline and company told them to do.
So why does Melaleuca tell their distributors that selling is going to be easy, that it's only sharing with people and no real sales skills are needed? They sugarcoat this idea because they know that most people really hate to sell. They don't want to see their distributors (and customers) scared away by telling them this one, simple, inconvenient and uncomfortable fact. If you are in network marketing you are in sales!
If you want to be a successful Melaleuca distributor you need to understand this. Selling is not sharing and sharing is not selling. Sharing is what pre-schoolers do. I know what you're thinking right now. "But I thought word of mouth advertising was the most powerful form of advertising out there?" My answer is yes and no. Yes, people's personal recommendations can be very powerful when they don't have a financial interest involved. When potential customers or prospects realize that distributors are making money out of the deal, their guard immediately goes up. Because an incentivized referral is completely different than an unbiased, third party opinion.
If you remember just one thing from this article, please let this next single point be it. To be successful in Melaleuca and network marketing in general, you have to learn effective sales skills and techniques. Realizing this is the first critical step towards retail success with them. You have to understand the sales process and what really motivates people. What makes them get out of bed in the morning? What keeps them awake at night? When it comes to selling, too much attention is paid to the product itself, rather than the customer who is doing the buying. Because chances are your prospect or customer doesn't really care about helping you out, they want to know what's in it for them.
A successful salesman is not the one who has memorized the history of their product and can recite all the ingredients and amazing health benefits. A truly successful salesman is the one who can make the connection between their prospect's true desires and how their product/service will fulfill those desires. Simply being enthusiastic and excited about your Melaleuca product or opportunity isn't going to get the job done. You have to start with your customer first, find out their needs, and then introduce the solution. Good sales always start with putting the customer first.
