How To Become A Computer Programmer

    View:
In this article I will show you how to become a computer programmer without going to college or studying computer science.

Not having a computer science degree or entering the programming job market with a high school degree is not as difficult as you may think. This is because when it comes to programming, employers put more emphasis on your ability to write good quality code than your educational credentials. Many programmers have taken advantage of this to forgo college and focus on developing their programming skills to the best of their ability.

What Do Employers Want?

Employers want to see good competent software developers more than anything else. Whether you taught yourself programming at home or you enrolled in college or get some computer programming training or studied from reading books or you bought a home distance or correspondence course, you still have to make over your resume, prepare for your programming interviews, find programming jobs, send your resume in and write code. And employers expect you to write good quality code, design your applications, document your applications etc. regardless of how you learnt computer programming.

Learning Computer Programming Is The Right Decision

One of the best kept secrets in computer programming is that you can gain real-world programming experience without having even having a programming job. When I stumbled upon this secret more than 10 years ago, I realized that I could simply buy a computer or laptop, hook it up to the internet and learn any programming skill, language or technology and get a good job except if I wanted to work with mainframes, satellites and some expensive to buy enterprise software packages. I realized that even if I had to pay for some training packages, buy books or take programming courses, my total cost of training, total learning time and learning curve will be a fraction of what it will be if I opted for other high-paying careers including law, medicine and business management.

How To Get A Computer Programming Job Without A College Degree

What you need to emphasize when looking for a computer programming job is your software development knowledge, coding skills and any programming experience that is related to the job you are interviewing for. If you happen not to have a college degree, emphasize your good points like your ability to learn technology fast, stay abreast of technology or solve programming problems that generally through other people off. In other words, you have to prove to prospective employers, hiring managers or technical recruiters that you can do the job well if given the chance. Make sure your prospective employer sees the list of programming projects you have completed in a short time, web sites or software programs you have built and a list of books and future projects you are planning to work on. In other words, show your prospective employer that you have a beautiful mind and make the case that you are an asset to any one who hires you!

How To Become A Computer Programmer
If you work in the computer programming field, you know that competition for jobs can sometimes be fierce. It can be hard looking for your dream job knowing that many other applicants are looking for the same thing. However, doing a few simple things can dramatically increase your chances of getting the computer programmer job that you want.

Upgrade your education

If it has been a while since you graduated from your degree program in computer science, it may be time to take a refresher course or two. Many employers are looking for programmers who are proficient in new programming tools such as Java and C++. If you don't have solid training in tools such as these, now may be the time to get some training.

You may also wish to get certified in a new computer programming language. This demonstrates to employers that you are competent in a language, and can give you an advantage over the competition. Check into certification if you haven't done so recently.

Another way to boost your chances of being hired is to take courses in business. These types of courses help you learn how to work directly with customers and can be very beneficial if you are looking to land a management position in computer programming.

Clean up your resume and cover letter

When is the last time you looked at your resume? Now is the time to make sure your resume has been updated with your most recent work experience and add any new programming languages and tools that you are proficient in. If your resume looks dated, take time to update the look and feel of your resume. Have someone else look it over as well and get good feedback on your resume.

A good cover letter is also essential to getting computer programmer jobs. Make sure to customize your cover letter to each specific job you apply to. Your cover letter should highlight your relevant experience and training.

Be proactive

It is vital to be proactive in today's market. Don't wait for job opportunities to come to you. Seek them out. Be bold and don't be shy about letting potential employers know why they should hire you.

Job seeking can be tough and discouraging, but it doesn't have to be. You can beat out the competition by following the above tips for making yourself stand out. Potential employers will see your outstanding training and skills and it won't be long before you are working in the job of your dreams.
