How To Build Deck Railing

    View:
An easy task to start with when thinking of going into this type of venture are outdoor projects. These can be far easier than say a chest of drawers or something like that. And one of the easiest is deck railings. These can add that final touch to a deck and give it that perfect look.

So, now that you are thinking of building your own customized deck railings, let's take a closer look at what that will take.

For sure, you have seen many different examples of deck railings around, and you may feel that you would also want to have one in your home. Fortunately, planning and building a deck railing is very easy to do. Even those who are inexperienced in this kind of thing can become an instant carpenter. In building a deck railing, you need to have careful planning, preparation, measuring and getting all the necessary tools needed.

Before building the deck railing, make sure that you are prepared. Most expert builders would suggest that you go around the neighborhood for you to be able to see different styles, and choose one that you will follow. You should always remember that the railings that you will build should fit to the style of your home and follow your personality. After you have decided on the style and the design that you want, you have to get all the necessary equipments needed and begin building your deck railings.

The basic tools that you will be needing in building your deck railing includes using a hammer, balusters, saw, caulking gun, wrench, drill, and a pair of eyewear that would protect your eyes from the flying debris. You will need to have a cinder block to be used in measuring the spaces.

Deck railings are quite easy to build and they are also very easy to install. In fact, it may take you only a couple of hours to complete the railings provided that you are using the proper tools to help you finish the job easier and faster. When you have already installed the railings, you may need to waterproof them. This will protect the railing from different weather conditions.

If you are knowledgeable about what you are doing, then it won't take long before you finish building the railings. But, if you're not quite sure about what you're doing, it's best that you ask professional help. It won't hurt if you ask for the assistance of a professional. In fact, it can even help you learn more about the proper way of building the railings. If you are on your own doing the railings and you commit mistakes, do not be discouraged. This is excusable for a non-professional. Instead, treat those mistakes as a stepping stone and learn from it. Sooner or later, you will become an expert in building deck railings.
How To Build Deck Railing
Because first impressions count making sure that the railings that surround your deck, line your steps or border your property will help a lot. However many times railings are overlooked in favour of other details such as paving or plants. Many people think railings are something purely functional but you can also add a touch of personality by including a few accents.

Styles of Deck Railing

When searching for deck railings you will find that most resemble wooden fences. Although these may be very practical, they can be a tad dull.

One way you can make your railing more inspiring is by mixing different materials together such as wood and iron. Wood is used for the main braces, posts and top while the iron is used in the middle as support.

Iron can take on my different styles and shapes. It can be curved, twisted and wiggly. There aren't many designs that couldn't be achieved using iron. Not only that but it's extremely strong and highly durable. The wood itself will need to be sanded and stained every so often, but the iron will be able to go years with little or no maintenance.

If you are looking for a material that requires little maintenance and is highly durable then have a look at vinyl. It can withstand rain, frost, heat and other damaging weather conditions. The need for sanding or staining has also been eliminated.

In addition to this, vinyl is great if you have children. This is because it doesn't splinter like wood does. It doesn't have any nails or rough edges. There are limits to the medium, however. It comes in very few colors; mainly white and brown.

Although wood can be boring there is still the possibility of buying wood railings that come in different patterns. You don't have to choose the standard look. Like iron, the wood supports can be shaped to add new elements to the deck railing.

Safety

Although wood is very commonly used for railings they do require a lifetime of care. They need to be sanded, stained and then sealed. This process should be done every few years to keep it looking good for many years to come. However, you will still find a board every now and then that needs to be replaced due to rot. Ensure that rotten parts are quickly replaced otherwise you could cause some injury to people who may lean on it.

Another thing to look for with wood railing is nails. Make sure that all the nails or screws are flush with the wood itself. This will avoid any hand injuries.

It is important that railings are sturdy and shouldn't move even just a little bit. The spaces between the inside supports should be close enough so that a small child's or pet's head could not fit between them.
